"Wir hatten gebauet ein stattliches Haus" is a German-language student song from 1819.[1]

Christmas lyrics[]

To the same tune, there are Christmas lyrics by  [de] written in 1845.[1] The Swedish adaptation from 1851[1] by Betty Ehrenborg-Posse is a well-known Christmas song, often sung in homes, in schools and sometimes in Saint Lucia's Day processions. It was originally used by the Swedish free church movement. The lyrics includes childhood references that were removed when the song was included in the hymnal Den svenska psalmboken 1986, and replaced with an adapted version of the lyrics that was originally published in 1906 in the song book . Who made this adaptation is unknown. The song has been recorded by Agnetha Fältskog on her 1981 Christmas album Nu tändas tusen juleljus,[2] Jul i Kvinnaböske from 1986 by Hasse Andersson[3] and Min barndoms jular from 1987 by Kikki Danielsson.[4]

There are also an English-language version with Christmas lyrics,: When Christmas Morn is Dawning. An alternate Swedish-language Christmas theme is called När juletid är inne.

In popular culture[]

A contrafact of the song, written by Elmer Bernstein and arranged in style parody of the song's orchestration in Johannes Brahms' "Academic Festival Overture," appears under the title "Faber College Theme" in the 1978 slob comedy National Lampoon's Animal House.
