The third season of the American psychological thriller television series You was ordered by Netflix on January 14, 2020. It features the continuation of Joe Goldberg's fraught relationship with Love, who is pregnant with his child in a new suburban home. You series creators Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble return as co-executive producers, and Gamble returns as showrunner. Penn Badgley, Victoria Pedretti, and Saffron Burrows, who was upgraded to a series regular, reprise their roles. New cast members include Shalita Grant, Travis Van Winkle, Dylan Arnold, and Tati Gabrielle. Michaela McManus portrays Joe's new neighbor, shown at end of the second season. In December 2020, the production of the third season was suspended for two months due to the COVID-19 pandemic and resumed in February 2021.[1] The ten-episode season premiered on October 15, 2021.[2][3][4]

Synopsis[]

In the third season, Joe and Love are married and raising their newborn son, Henry, in the fictitious Californian suburb of Madre Linda. As their relationship dynamic takes a new turn, Joe continues to repeat the cycle of obsession with a burgeoning interest in Natalie Engler, the next door neighbor. This time, Love flips the script to ensure that her dream of having the perfect family will not be torn away so easily by Joe's compulsive actions. However, after Love takes care of the Natalie problem, Joe turns his obsession to Marienne, a librarian who shares a troubled childhood in the foster system. Further complicating Love and Joe's relationship, Natalie's stepson Theo falls head over heels for Love.

Following a brief conversation with Natalie, Love accuses Joe of being obsessed with her, but he denies. Later, Natalie shows Love a vacant store to open a bakery and she is murdered by Love on the property basement after Love discovers Joe's box of paraphernalia he stole from Natalie.

Meanwhile, they develop a strategy to get rid of Natalie's body into a nearby forest and create a convincing alibi for her disappearance. Love meets Theo, a college student, on a chance encounter at the supermarket and Joe also tries to befriend Marienne, Madre Linda's librarian to restore rare books to sell for money toward Ellie. On the Conrad's twins birthday, they discover that the residents in Madre Linda each have a biosensor developed by Matthew on their rings, which prompts them to dig Natalie up, remove the ring and bury her under concrete on a construction site. Love and Joe work their differences out and promise to each other to make everything possible to never kill anybody again. Love opens her bakery called "A Fresh Tart" and discovers Theo is Matthew's step-son.

As Natalie's disappearance attracts media attention, Love suggests they frame Matthew for her murder. Theo begins to flirt with Love at her bakery, but she refutes his advances. Henry contracts measles and is rushed to the hospital. Dottie reveals she has bought a vineyard and the Quinn family's income is in flux. Love and Joe decide to frame Matthew by planting Natalie's bloodstained scarf in his home. While breaking into the Engler's house, Joe discovers he has measles and collapses. He awakens in the living room to Matthew nursing him; Joe suggests that Matthew make a press statement to clear his image. Love bonds with Theo in the hospital, who reveals his strained relationship with his stepfather. As Henry recovers, Joe and Love decide not to frame Matthew and burn the scarf. Detectives find Natalie's vitals ring, which Love left on a bathroom sink in a state park. At a vigil outside the Englers's house, Matthew makes a statement urging Natalie to come home. The next day, Gil, a neighbor, reveals to Love that Henry contracted measles from his daughters, who are unvaccinated because he and his wife are against vaccines. As he is leaving, Love bludgeons him unconscious.

Love and Joe lock Gil in the plexiglass cage in the bakery's basement. Joe realizes they cannot let Gil go without assurances he will not report the assault. Joe suggests to Love that they should find incriminating evidence on Gil to ensure he will not go to the police. Sherry organizes a community search for Natalie and asks Love to help. Joe fails to discover anything to blackmail Gil with. Love enlists Cy, an investigator used by the Quinns, to dig into Gil's life. He discovers that Gil's son is a sexual predator who has attacked young women. When Love and Joe confront Gil with the information, he is disgusted to know that his son has continued his abusive behavior. Later, Gil hangs himself inside the cage. Joe and Love decide to frame Gil for Natalie's death: Love plants the murder weapon with Gil's fingerprints in the forest to have it discovered during the community search while Joe takes Gil's body to the Brigham residence and stages the scene to make it appear Gil killed himself over the guilt of having murdered Natalie. Theo kisses Love after they share a heartfelt conversation and Joe starts to become obsessed with Marienne.

Joe and Love's therapist suggests that Joe should make new friends, so he agrees to go on a hunting trip with Cary, Brandon, Andrew and Jackson. Joe discovers that Love has been paying for Theo's Uber trips and confronts her. Love says that Theo has nobody to look after him and confesses that Theo kissed her at the bakery. During the trip, Cary takes Joe on a night hunt and they get into an argument during which Joe pushes Cary over a cliff, knocking him out. Joe carries an unconscious Cary back to the camp; Cary declares that he has helped Joe find his inner strength. Joe cries cathartically and embraces his new-found friends. Theo calls Love from the police station after getting detained for driving an electric scooter while inebriated. Theo then invites Love to ride the scooter with him and they end up having sex. Dottie realizes what Love has done after she gets home, and Love decides to cut all ties with Theo. Joe sets off the bakery's alarm to give himself an alibi to get out of the house and stalk Marienne.

Joe breaks into Marienne's house to discover more about her. Love messages Forty's phone as if he were alive, confessing that she might be pregnant with Theo's baby. Theo contacts Love and expresses his concern about Matthew, who is back from a trip and has already locked himself up in his office. Matthew is confronted by Jean, his company's lawyer, for illegally surveilling Madre Linda's residents. Joe breaks into Marienne's office and discovers that she is a former addict and is in the middle of a custody battle with Ryan Goodwin, her ex-husband. Love begins experiencing her period after an argument with Dottie and is relieved she is not pregnant by Theo. Theo discovers Matthew's obsession with Madre Linda's residents and their ties to Natalie. Joe witnesses an argument between Ryan and Marienne at the library and intervenes. A drunk Love hallucinates Forty's presence, which ultimately helps her grieve his death. The library's sprinkler system malfunctions, and as Joe spends the night helping Marienne save books, she opens up about her problems and they kiss passionately. Theo warns Love that Matthew is spying on everyone in Madre Linda. Joe and Love agree that Love should keep Theo around as a source of information on Matthew's investigation.

Marienne tells Joe that they cannot evolve their relationship. Sherry enlists Love to help with the catering for the library's fundraiser event. When Ryan arrives, Joe plots to destroy him by making him relapse on his addiction. A drunken Dottie tells Love that her ex-husband took both Anavrin and the vineyard from her on the divorce arbitration, leaving Dottie with no income. Matthew enlists Leez, his company's lead programmer and former hacker and asks her to aid him in hacking into Madre Linda's security feeds. Love unsuccessfully tries foreplay with Joe, leading her to have sex with Theo instead. Joe later apologizes to Love with a gift. At the fundraiser, Love meets Marienne while Joe sees that his plan backfired when Ryan appears well and sober at the event and confronts him by letting Joe know that he's aware that Joe has been following him around. Sherry tells Love that she and Cary are very much attracted to her and Joe and that they should try swinging. Their discussion is interrupted by the discovery that Dottie has taken Henry, and set the vineyard on fire. Dottie is sentenced to a rehab stint and Love cuts ties with her. Dottie confides to Joe that Love might have killed James, Love's first husband.

Joe goes along with Love's idea of meeting the Conrads for a swing date, hoping that it would create a loophole in their marriage that would enable a future relationship with Marienne. The Conrads presents Joe and Love a non-disclosure agreement. Marienne asks Joe to testify on her behalf at a custody hearing, since he witnessed Ryan and Marienne's argument. Theo breaks into his office, finding that Matthew has a searchable database of video feeds from Madre Linda. Matthew reveals that he's particularly interested in Love, since she was the last person to be with Natalie on the day she went missing. Joe and Love invite the Conrads for their sexual encounter. Marienne calls Joe and tearfully tells that Ryan sent explicit pictures of her to everyone in her contact list, in an effort to demoralize her. Love notices Joe envisioning someone else while having sex with Sherry, which leads to an argument in which Love loudly reveals that she killed Natalie. The Conrads try to flee the house but are subdued by Joe and Love and put into the cage. Joe and Love have sex and they realize that the violence gives them sexual pleasure. Joe attends Marienne's custody hearing only to realize that Ryan has rigged it in his favor.

Joe cleans the house and finds Cary's gun. Theo offers to get Love a copy of Matthew's surveillance footage, believing Love is Joe's innocent victim. Joe finds Marienne outside a liquor store where she tells Joe that Ryan is taking her daughter to New Jersey. Joe encourages her not to give up on her daughter and they end up having sex. Sherry tries to bond with Love in order to get herself and Cary out of the cage. She suggests that Love expose Matthew's illegal investigation on Sherry's blog. Jean and the company legal team demand Matthew delete the surveillance database. Theo manages to get a backup of data before its deletion. Love, hoping one Conrad will kill the other and create a murder–suicide narrative, gives them Cary's gun and says she will set one of them free as long as one kills the other. Joe stalks Ryan but Ryan confronts him and the two struggle before Joe stabs him to death. Theo analyses the footage and discovers that Joe was the one who left with Natalie's car. Theo goes to find Love at the bakery only to find the Conrads trapped in the cage. On his way out, he encounters Love, who hits him in the head with a fire extinguisher.

Love confesses to Joe that she attacked Theo, whom she left in the bakery's basement, and suggests they have another baby. Sherry shoots Cary in the leg after he accidentally hurts her ear with a ricocheted bullet upon trying to shoot the door lock. Joe discovers that Theo is alive and helps him to the hospital. Love discovers Joe's t-shirt with Ryan's blood and realizes that Joe is obsessed with Marienne. At dinner, Love confronts him about Marienne while Joe asks for a divorce and confronts her about James' mysterious death, wielding a kitchen knife under the table. Love confesses that she accidentally killed James by using aconite. She also reveals that she knew that Joe would take the knife and poisoned its handle, rendering him paralyzed. Love asks Marienne to come over, intending to kill her, and leaves to deliver an order. Matthew finds Joe paralyzed on the floor and Joe reveals Theo's location to him. When Love returns, she reveals to Marienne that that Joe killed Ryan, but refrains from killing her when Marienne's daughter interrupts, and allows them to leave. As Love prepares to kill Joe, he injects her with aconite, revealing that he knew about the poison and took the antidote beforehand. Love dies and Joe leaves Henry at Dante and Lansing's doorstep. He stages a murder-suicide, writing Love's suicide note confessing to all of the murders and setting the house on fire. The Conrads manage to mend their differences and find the key to the cage, freeing themselves. Months later, Theo is recovering from his injuries with Matthew's help, Dante and Lansing legally adopt Henry after a court battle with Dottie, and Jackson and Andrew buy the bakery. Sherry and Cary write a book about how their experience in the cage amended their marriage. Joe, using the alias "Nick" and spurred on by Marienne's previously-confessed Parisian fantasies, escapes to Paris in search of her.

Development[]

Netflix confirmed that You was renewed for a 10-episode third season on January 14, 2020, approximately three weeks after the second season was released.[10][11][12] Prior to the official announcement, lead actor Penn Badgley accidentally let slip that there would be a third season during an Entertainment Tonight interview.[13] Production on the third season began in February 2020 but was later suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[14] Production resumed in November 2020.[10] Sera Gamble returned as showrunner and served as co-executive producer with series co-creator Greg Berlanti.[10]

The first two seasons were loosely based on the books You and Hidden Bodies by Caroline Kepnes.[10] A third book written by Kepnes was published on April 6, 2021, but it is unclear the extent to which that novel's plot will inform You's third season.[3] When asked a question about the season following the plot of the third book in an interview with FilmInk, Gamble answered that "You'll be able to see the parallels when you read the book. But over the course of season two, Joe and Love went in a few directions different than Caroline's books. The longer a TV show exists alongside a book or a book series, the more it sort of diverges."[15]

Filming[]

For the third season, the series was awarded $7.2 million in tax credits by the state of California.[16] Filming for the third season began on November 2, 2020, and was originally scheduled to conclude in April 2021.[17][18] On December 31, 2020, production for the third season was suspended for two weeks due to a surge in the COVID-19 pandemic.[19] Filming resumed in February 2021 and ended in April 2021.[19][1][14][20]

Casting[]

Penn Badgley will return in the lead role of Joe Goldberg, and Victoria Pedretti will reprise her role as Love Quinn, Joe's girlfriend, who is pregnant with his child as the second season ends.[10] In October 2020, Travis Van Winkle and Shalita Grant were cast as series regulars and Scott Speedman was cast in a recurring role.[6][7][10][21] On November 18, 2020, Dylan Arnold and Tati Gabrielle were announced as new series regular cast members, and recurring guests Michaela McManus, Shannon Chan-Kent, Ben Mehl, Christopher O'Shea, Christopher Sean, Bryan Safi, Mackenzie Astin, Ayelet Zurer, Jack Fisher, and Mauricio Lara were also announced.[5] McManus will portray Joe's mysterious neighbor shown briefly at the end of the second season.[22] Saffron Burrows was promoted to series regular after appearing in a recurring role in the second season.[5] On January 25, 2021, Scott Michael Foster joined the cast in a recurring role for the third season.[9] On April 15, 2021, it was confirmed that John Stamos would not be returning in the third season.[23]

Release[]

As part of a video and letter to its shareholders in April 2021, Netflix's co-chief executive officer and chief content officer, Ted Sarandos confirmed that the third season of You would premiere sometime in the fourth quarter of 2021.[2][24] On August 30, 2021, Netflix announced that the third season would premiere on October 15, 2021.[4] A teaser trailer was released that day that revealed the name of Love and Joe's baby, Henry.[25] On September 17, 2021, the official trailer for the third season was released.[26]

Reception[]

Critics gave the third season positive reviews. On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the season holds a 96% approval rating with an average rating of 8.00/10 based on 53 reviews. The website's critics consensus reads, "You takes its thrilling saga to the suburbs with superb results, made all the more delicious by Penn Badgley and Victoria Pedretti's committed performances."[27] On Metacritic, the third season has a weighted average score of 77 out of 100, based on 13 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[28]

In a positive review of the third season, Clémence Michallon from The Independent wrote that, "With such an established fanbase, You could be resting on its laurels by now, endlessly recycling its initial premise without recreating the excitement of the beginning. Kudos, then, to the writers who have succeeded, exquisitely so, in taking it to new heights."[29] Cass Clarke from Comic Book Resources recommended the third season in her review by highlighting that, "Season 3 does a fine job at showcasing the vapidness of a Silicon Valley-like suburb, where neighbors are mostly concerned with intermittent fasting, drugs and updating their Instagram stories on the hour every hour", further praising the narrative, by adding that it "You's writing is at its best when Love is given a chance to outsmart Joe, as opposed to being just more fodder for him to play with and destroy. Without spoiling the bloody mayhem to come, the You Season 3 finale showcases Pedretti's most captivating performance to date."[30]

Brian Lowry from CNN praised the third season, stating that it is "continues the greatness of the first season and delivers a satisfying, bloody good time".[31] Kayla Cobb of Decider gave the third season a very positive review, writing: "You season 3 is a marital therapy session wrapped in murder, lies, and even more glass cages. Stick with it, and you will be rewarded beyond your wildest, blood-soaked dreams." She said further that, "The acting is stronger than ever, now that Badgley's Joe has a worthy opponent, and you won't be able to see the season's big twists coming. No matter why you initially enjoyed You, you're going to fall in love with this new season, and Love Quinn."[32]
