"Your Power" is a song by American singer Billie Eilish. The song was released by Darkroom and Interscope Records on April 29, 2021, as the third single off of Eilish's second studio album, Happier Than Ever (2021).[3] The song was written by Eilish and her brother Finneas O'Connell, with production being handled by the latter.

Background and release[]

Eilish released a snippet of "Your Power", a ballad with acoustic instrumentation, on April 28, 2021.[4][5] Regarding the track, Eilish stated, "This is one of my favorite songs I've ever written. I feel very vulnerable putting this one out because I hold it so close to my heart. This is about many different situations that we've all either witnessed or experienced. I hope I can inspire change. Try not to abuse your power."[6] In her 2021 British Vogue cover story following the release of her single, the 19-year-old star talks her new song's "open letter to people who take advantage," body image, and sexual misconduct.[7] In an official Vevo Happier Than Ever interview, Eilish said that she choses singles because of their lyrics rather than if the song "will be big". Regarding "Your Power", the singer expressed that the song felt like "very kind of middle ground for the album". According to her, she assigns "tang brown" color to both the song, and the album.[8]

Composition[]

Critics, who described the song as a folk ballad,[9][10][1] noted the timbral contrast between the track and Eilish's older work. In an article, The Guardian's Alexis Petridis wrote that the song "dials down the electronic horror-movie soundtrack approach of Eilish's previous album in favour of something more understated ... there's nothing to it but an acoustic guitar and Eilish's reverb-drenched voice"; thereafter, Petridis noted stylistic influences from Mazzy Star and Lana Del Rey.[1] Rolling Stone's Brittany Spanos shared similar opinions, writing that "Eilish sings above a delicate, acoustic guitar riff."[11]

Chart performance[]

In the United States, "Your Power" entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 10 as the week's highest debut. The song marks Billie's third top 10 debut on the chart and fifth top 10 overall. [12] The following week, "Your Power" plummeted to number 29, before further falling to number 54 in its third.[13][14]

An accompanying music video was released alongside the song.[16] The video was directed by Eilish herself.[17] It depicts Eilish singing the song on the mountainside. An 80-pound (36 kg) anaconda later appears and slowly wraps itself around Eilish.[18][19]
