"Your Song" is a song by British singer Rita Ora. It was released to digital retailers on 26 May 2017 as the lead single from her second studio album, Phoenix (2018).[2][3] The song peaked at number seven on the UK Singles Chart, becoming Ora's ninth single to reach the top 10 in the UK. It also reached the top twenty in more than fifteen countries, including Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand.

Composition[]

"Your Song" is performed in the key of B minor with a tempo of 118 beats per minute in common time. The song follows a chord progression of Bm–G–D–G–D–A–Bm, and Ora's vocals span from A3 to D5.[4] The song contains uncredited chorus vocals by Ed Sheeran.

Critical reception[]

"Your Song" received generally favourable reviews from music critics. Douglas Greenwood of NME regarded the song as "such a modest comeback single that feels so refreshing in an age of proudly confrontational, 'fuck you' pop penned for women."[5] In The Times, Ed Potton deemed it "a gloriously stripped-down love song".[6] The Line of Best Fit said the track "captures what's now become Rita's new calling card of emotionally apprehensive pop blasts."[7] Financial Times critic Ludovic Hunter-Tilney called the song "charming, fleet-footed romantic pop".[8] Jason Lipshutz of Billboard commented that Ora exuded confidence and found the track "light, great" and "well-designed".[9] Clash reviewer Malvika Padin wrote that "Your Song" will "leave you reaching for the replay button".[10]

In a negative review, Jon Pareles of The New York Times referred to the track as "manufactured passion", noting its "clinical precision" and Sheeran's involvement to "summon sincerity".[11] PopMatters writer Robert Loss compared the song's riff to a generic cell phone ringtone, saying, "It doesn't get more synthesized with 'lived experience' than that."[12] In The Guardian, Michael Cragg said Sheeran's "frugal facade reaches its apex" with the line, "And then we make love right there on your best friend's couch".[13]

Music video[]

The audio for the song was uploaded to YouTube a day before its official release.[14] On 22 June 2017, the official music video for "Your Song" was released on Ora's YouTube channel. The video, filmed in Vancouver, was directed by Michael Haussman.[15]

Live performances[]

Ora performed "Your Song" for the first time on 25 May 2017 during an amfAR charity gala at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.[16] She reprised the performance for Radio 1's Big Weekend in Hull on 28 May.[17] On 23 June, she gave the first televised performance of the song on The One Show on BBC One.[18] Ora performed the song on the French television show Quotidien a week later, on 30 June.[19][20] On 18 July, Ora performed the song on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.[21] She performed the song at the 2017 Teen Choice Awards, on 13 August, and again on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on 3 October 2017. Ora sang a medley of "Anywhere" and "Your Song" at the 2017 MTV Europe Music Awards on 12 November.[22] She repeated the same medley of songs at the 2017 Bambi Awards on 16 November.[23] On 12 April 2018, Ora performed the song live during a medley with "Anywhere" and "For You" (duet with Liam Payne) at the German Echo Music Prize.[24]
