The African Youth Championship 1987 was contested through home and away matches. It also served as qualification for the 1987 FIFA World Youth Championship.

Preliminary round[]
Angola were disqualified for fielding overaged players. Other pairings were: Swaziland vs Mauritius, Lesotho vs Mozambique, Egypt vs Sudan, Ghana vs Gabon, Gambia vs Togo, Mauritania vs Algeria. It might be possible that most of the eliminated teams withdrew however so their opponents advanced to the next round.
