The 1997 Cal Poly Mustangs football team represented California Polytechnic State University[note 1] during the 1997 NCAA Division I-AA football season.

Cal Poly competed as an NCAA Division I-AA independent in 1997. The Mustangs were led by first-year head coach Larry Welsh and played home games at Mustang Stadium in San Luis Obispo, California. They finished the season with a record of ten wins and one loss (10–1). Overall, the team outscored its opponents 382–213 for the season.
