Petra Kvitová was the defending champion, but withdrew from the tournament after her first match because of nasopharyngitis.

Serena Williams defeated Maria Sharapova in straight sets in a rematch of their 2004 final. Williams did not lose a set in the entire tournament, and as of 2019 remains the most recent champion to do so.

Angelique Kerber and Sara Errani made their debut in the event.
