Champions League review[]

Group stage review[]

As champions,[1] Bayern entered Champions League in the group stage.[238] On 27 August, in the group stage draw, Bayern were drawn against Arsenal, Olympiacos, and Dinamo Zagreb.[239] The first match took place on 16 September against Olympiacos.[240] This was Bayern's 200th Champions League match[241] and their first match in Greece since 1983.[242] Bayern defeated Olympiacos 3–0 with two goals from Thomas Müller and a goal from Mario Götze.[243] Müller's first goal was "looped" into the net from a cross.[244] His second goal came from the penalty spot in stoppage time after Kingsley Coman was fouled.[243] Bayern finished the matchday in first place.[245] Before the match, the police in Athens were in an altercation with Bayern supporters where batons were used.[246] Several Bayern supporters went to the hospital and had left the hospital by the following day.[242] Bayern have lodged an appeal against the incident.[246] Then Bayern faced Dinamo Zagreb on 29 September.[247] Bayern won the match 5–0 with three goals from Robert Lewandowski and a goal each from Douglas Costa and Mario Götze.[248] Lewandowski's three goals brought him up to 10 goals in his last three matches in all competitions.[249] Bayern finished the matchday in first place.[250] Bayern faced Arsenal on 20 October.[251] Arsenal won the match 2–0[252] with goals from Olivier Giroud and Mesut Özil.[253] This was Bayern's first loss of the season in all competitions.[254] Bayern remained in first place.[255] On 4 November, Bayern defeated Arsenal 5–1.[256] Bayern got two goals from Thomas Müller and a goal each from Robert Lewandowski, David Alaba, and Arjen Robben.[257] Robben's goal came on his first touch after 37 seconds.[258] Olivier Giroud scored for Arsenal.[257] The goal brought him up to three goals in four matches against Bayern.[258] This was Arsenal's first loss at Allianz Arena.[259] Mesut Özil had a goal called back after the referee ruled it that Özil put it in with his elbow.[258][259] Bayern remained in first place.[260] On 24 November,[261] Bayern won their 100th Champions League home match,[261] and won Group F,[262] after they defeated Olympiacos 4–0[263] with goals from Douglas Costa, Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Müller, and Kingsley Coman.[264] Holger Badstuber, who had started match since April 2015,[262] was sent–off[261] in the 52nd minute.[263] Bayern finished the matchday in first place.[265] On 9 December,[266] Bayern finished the group stage by winning their fifth match in the group stage[266] after defeating Dinamo Zagreb[267] 2–0 with two goals from Robert Lewandowski.[268] Thomas Müller failed to score from the penalty mark after the ball hit the post.[269] Bayern finished the group by winning the group[269] and obtained 15 points[270] from five wins.[266]

Knockout stage review[]

Bayern finished the group stage as the group winners[269] which made Bayern one of the seeded teams in the Round of 16 draw. Bayern were drawn against Juventus on 14 December.[271] The first leg took place on 23 February.[272] Bayern and Juventus finished in a 2–2 draw.[273] Thomas Müller and Arjen Robben scored for Bayern and Paulo Dybala and Stefano Sturaro scored for Juventus.[274] Bayern went up 2–0[274] after Müller scored in the 43rd minute and Robben scored in the 55th minute.[272] However, Bayern blew the 2–0 lead[274] after two second-half goals from Dybala and Sturaro.[272] The second leg happened on 16 March.[275] Bayern won 4–2 in extra time.[276] Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Müller, Thiago, and Kingsley Coman scored for Bayern.[275] Paul Pogba and Juan Cuadrado scored for Juventus.[275] Juventus took a 2–0 lead in the match[277] with goals in the fifth minute[275] from Pogba,[277] and in the 28th minute,[275] from Cuadrado.[277] However, Bayern equalized in the second–half with a goal in the 73rd minute from Lewandowski[277] and a goal from Müller one minute in to stoppage time.[277] In extra time, Bayern took a 4–2 lead with goals from Thiago and Coman.[277] The aggregate score was 6–4.[277]

On 18 March, Bayern were drawn against Benfica for the quarter–finals.[278] The first leg took place on 5 April.[279] Bayern won 1–0[280] with a goal from Arturo Vidal.[281] The goal was scored after one minute and 24 seconds.[282] This the fastest goal Bayern has scored since David Alaba scored against Juventus in April 2013.[282] The second leg was held on 13 April.[283] The match finished in a 2–2.[284] Arturo Vidal and Thomas Müller scored for Bayern and Raúl Jiménez and Talisca scored for Benfica.[285] Philipp Lahm played in his 103rd UEFA Champions League match.[285] This equaled Oliver Kahn's record for most appearances in Germany.[285] Bayern qualified for the semifinal for the 5th year in a row[283][286] after winning 3–2 on aggregate.[283]

On 15 April, Bayern were drawn against Atlético Madrid.[287] The first leg was played on 27 April.[288] Atlético Madrid won the match 1–0[289] with a goal from Saúl.[288] The second leg took place on 3 May.[290] Bayern won the match 2–1.[291] However, Atlético Madrid won the tie on away goals.[290] Xabi Alonso and Robert Lewandowski scored for Bayern and Antoine Griezmann scored for Atlético Madrid.[290]
