The 2021 MLB Little League Classic was a regular season Major League Baseball (MLB) game played on August 22, 2021, in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, during the 2021 MLB season and the 2021 Little League World Series. It was the fourth playing of the annual MLB Little League Classic game. The game was contested between the Cleveland Indians and the Los Angeles Angels, televised on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball, and aired on ESPN Radio. The game, sponsored by GEICO, was won by Cleveland, 3–0.
Background[]
The first playing of the MLB Little League Classic was held in 2017.[1] Through the 2019 playing, each edition matched two National League teams. The 2020 edition was slated to feature the Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox of the American League, however, that game was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[2]
In August 2020, MLB announced that the 2021 edition would be contested between the Cleveland Indians and Los Angeles Angels of the American League.[3] Joe Maddon, manager of the Angels, previously managed the Chicago Cubs in the 2019 edition of the game.[4]
Cleveland was the designated home team for the Classic, the final game of a three-game series between the clubs, with the first two games played at Progressive Field in Cleveland. Both of those games were won by Cleveland; 9–1 on August 20,[5] and 5–1 on August 21.[6] Cleveland entered the Classic with a record of 60–61, in second place in the AL Central, while Los Angeles entered the game with a record of 62–63, in fourth place in the AL West.[7]
For the Classic, the MLB teams were issued uniforms corresponding to the Little League regions they are based in: the Great Lakes Region for Cleveland and the West Region for Los Angeles.[8]
