The 2022 Chilean national plebiscite will be held in Chile in the third quarter of 2022, in order to determine whether the public agrees with the text of a new Political Constitution of the Republic drawn up by the Constitutional Convention, which is why it is also known as an "exit plebiscite".[1]
Election date[]
According to the itinerary originally proposed for the constituent process, it was estimated that the plebiscite to approve or reject the text of the new Constitution would take place in September 2021 —if the Constitutional Convention met its term of 9 months and did not request the 3-month extension— or in March 2022 —if it requested such an extension—.[2] In addition, the exit plebiscite cannot be held 60 days before or after another election, nor can it be held in January or February, moving to the first Sunday in March if the latter situation occurred.[3][4]
As a result of the postponement of the first plebiscite to 25 October 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the date of the exit plebiscite was also modified, estimating that it will be held during the third quarter of 2022, with the latest possible date during the month of September.[5]
Format[]
Article 142 of the 1980 Political Constitution of the Republic of Chile indicates the text that will contain the ballot in the plebiscite:[3]
In the aforementioned plebiscite, the citizens will have an electoral card that will contain the following question [...]: "Do you approve the text of the New Constitution proposed by the Constitutional Convention?". Under the question posed there will be two horizontal stripes, one next to the other. The first one will have the expression "Approve" at the bottom and the second one, the word "Reject", so that the voter can mark his preference over one of the alternatives.
