Amelia Gething (born 1999) is an English comedy writer, actress and YouTuber. She stars and writes for the BBC show The Amelia Gething Complex and played Ursula Pole in the Starz historical drama The Spanish Princess. She primarily writes surreal comedy.[1]
Biography[]
Gething first started making videos with her younger brother on an old camera, before joining Musical.ly (later TikTok) in September 2015. After spending a year saving up for a £400 for a new camera,[2] she began her career as a comedy sketch artist in August 2016 when she started writing and performing short sketches for her YouTube channel,[3][4][5] although this was not her first attempt at using the platform.[1]
In April 2018, Gething appeared in an episode of British soap Hollyoaks, where she played an exaggerated version of herself.[6]
Having always wanted to enter the "traditional acting" world,[5] Gething was cast as Ursula Pole in the second season of the Starz historical drama The Spanish Princess, broadcast from October–November 2020.[1]
The Amelia Gething Complex[]
Gething was approached by the BBC in mid-2018 to create a comedy series[5] intended to be a female-led comedy sketch show, which eventually became The Amelia Gething Complex.[1] Made by CBBC In-House Productions,[7] the first season was released on BBC iPlayer in October 2019[8] before being broadcast on BBC Two a month later.[9] A second season was commissioned by the BBC[10] and was released on iPlayer in March 2021 and with broadcast commencing on BBC Two in April.[11] Season 2 was post-produced by Timeline North using a hybrid editing setup.[12]
Along with Gething, who plays herself, the show stars Natalia Hinds and Jasmin Hinds as Amelia's flatmates, Poppy and Vinny, as well as Alex Griffin-Griffiths as Wallace, the trio's neighbour.[7]
In total, there have been 18 episodes over the course of two seasons.[13]
