Amrutham (lit. 'Elixir') was an Indian Telugu-language sitcom television series created by Gangaraju Gunnam.[1] The story revolves around a fictional restaurant in Hyderabad named Amrutha Vilas and its owners who find themselves in hilarious situations with their money making schemes. The show originally aired on Gemini TV from 2001 to 2007 with 313 episodes.[2][3]

A spin-off film titled Amrutham Chandamamalo was released in 2014.[4] Its sequel, Amrutham Dhvitheeyam began streaming on ZEE5 after 13 years from March 2020.[5]

Premise[]

The show revolves around two friends – Amrutha Rao "Amrutham" (Sivaji Raja, Naresh & Harsha Vardhan playing the role at various points of the sitcom) and Anjaneyulu "Anji" (Gundu Hanumantha Rao) who decide to start a restaurant namely Amrutha Vilas after Amrutham's job at Bow Bow Biscuits as an assistant manager has came to an end after his boss Ambhujanabham () fired him out and after trying gambling, auto driving, and other hilarious situations forced him to start Amrutha Vilas. He has Appaji (Sivannarayana Naripeddi), a miser who subjects his tenants to unreasonable penalties. He wears colourful shirts and an ancestral gold belt from where he derives all his miser as his house owner. Amrutham's wife Sanjeevani (played by Jhansi, , and at various points of the sitcom) is a gullible yet ambitious wife. Anji's wife Shanta (Ragini) is a working woman who also helps him at his business. The sitcom focuses on their hilarious situations while making money making schemes with Anji's quirky ideas.

    Proprietor of "Amrutha Vilas," which he started with his childhood friend Anjaneyulu. His full name is Icchapurapu Ksheera Sagara Panchamrutha Rao. He is skeptical, inquisitive and an atheist. He used to work in Bow-Bow Biscuits before starting his own restaurant.[6]
  • Amudala "Anji" Anjaneyulu played by Gundu Hanumantha Rao
    An expert chef, Amrutham's best friend and a man full of ideas. Often comes up with quirky plans to boost their business which often end up failing.[6]
  • Sarveswaran "Sarvam" played by Vasu Inturi
    Servant of Amrutha Vilas who is a migrant from Tamil Nadu.[6]
  • Gongali Appaji played by Sivannarayana Naripeddi
    Exploitative landlord who subjects his tenants to unreasonable penalties. He wears colourful shirts and an ancestral gold belt from where he derives all his miser.[6]
  • Sanjeevani "Sanju" played by Jhansi, , and

Production[]

As many as eleven debutant directors worked for series, most notable being Chandra Sekhar Yeleti. Most of the episodes were written by Gangaraju Gunnam along with Vasu Inturi.[7] First episode Go Grupravesham was aired on 18 November 2001 while the final episode Tata Bye Bye Veedkolu was aired in 2007.[8]
