History[]
Kalanithi Maran launched Gemini TV as a private limited company engaged in television broadcasting with its registered office in Hyderabad, Telangana since 9 February 1995.[3] Gemini TV is the first Telugu satellite channel. It has its own first in many avenues like doing live shows, presenting daily soaps, and live interaction shows with film stars.[4] It gained critical acclaim and good viewership with colorful and entertaining broadcasting content and became a chart-topper in less than 5 years. In November 2006, Kalanithi Maran merged Gemini TV Ltd with Sun TV Network Ltd along with Udaya TV for the IPO listing of Sun TV Network.[5][6][7]
Sun18
Viacom 18 has 50% dealing distribution with Sun TV Network, which led them to make , creating a solid distribution identity. With the creation of Sun18, Sun TV Network became responsible for the South Indian market, while Viacom18 was responsible for the North Indian market.
Within a few years, Sun TV Network began distributing its channels as its own companies, while Viacom18 distributed its tracks through a single company named IndiaCast Media Distribution Private Limited. (Mainly, this was not a content-sharing deal; in these same years, Raj TV, Polimer TV, and MAA TV have bought the rights of serials dubbed in Tamil and Telugu, which they made in commissioned method. But Sun TV and also purchased some ownership of some publications to dub in their regional markets before)
2021 Content Revamp of Gemini TV
Since 2015 there has been significant competition in the Telugu Television Market and Tamil and other markets. Still, Sun TV Network has managed to be the market leader in Tamil, but they have lost to gain the No.1 in Telugu most of the time. But after the first wave of Covid 19, Sun TV Network observed the most significant downfall in their Telugu and Malayalam GEC's as well as a massive increase in fiction market share in Kannada and an increase in market share Tamil. Hence, they planned to revamp their Telugu and Malayalam GEC content with many fictions and big-ticket shows. First, they bought the rights of the Evaru Meelo Koteeswarulu which the show flopped in its fourth season by getting a low TRP 4.5 points (Meelo Evaru Koteeswarudu) which have been hosted by Chiranjeevi on Star Maa, because of this flop season Star India was not interested in continuing it. Still, Sun TV Network has now bought the rights of its 5th season with Supernatural host Young Tiger Jr NTR. It was produced by Sony Pictures Networks India and also purchased the rights of the MasterChef India - Telugu which was produced by Endemol Shine India and hosted by Tamannaah. Also, they have been launched two new serials, Kavyanjali and Sundari, with more publications in the pipeline. The TRP ratings will be released on 3 September 2021, which will indicate if the content revamp helped Sun TV Network. They have also updated their content in Surya TV with big-ticket shows and serials. As of February 2021, Sun TV Network has raised their Tamil market share to 45% from 36% previously; the management said they were unsatisfied. We will work hard to grow and hope to Gain a huge Market share in other markets with content revamp. They also confirmed they were in talks with some International format owners to correct Kannada and Bangali Markets.
