Angella Dravid is a New Zealand comedian, writer and actress.

Early life[]

Dravid was born in Oman to Indian and Samoan parents. She immigrated to New Zealand at the age of three but her family later relocated to rural Australia.[1][2]

At the age of 17 after being groomed online, Dravid ran away from home and arrived in the UK to begin a relationship with a man 29 years older than her. They married when she was 18, however their relationship became abusive. At 19 Dravid was later arrested and convicted of assaulting her husband.[3] Despite the fact that the offense was relatively minor Dravid had been isolated in the UK and had no one to bail her out. She subsequently spent three years in a bail hostel and two months in prison before being deported and divorcing her husband. Dravid would subsequently refer to her time in the hostel and prison as being overall positive experiences compared to the domestic violence she had experienced during her marriage.[4]

Career[]

After her release from prison Dravid was deported to New Zealand. Dravid initially had no intention of pursuing a career in entertainment and worked odd jobs including as a receptionist at a brothel.[5] She initially attended an open mic night to get over her anxiety at working customer service facing jobs and continued to pursue stand up comedy after her sets were successful.

In 2017 she turned her experience of being in an abusive relationship into a show called Down the Rabbit Hole.[6] For her performance Dravid won the 2017 Billy T Award. In 2020 it was announced she was working on adapting the play into a film.[7]

She appeared on the first season of the New Zealand adaptation of Taskmaster which was filmed and aired in 2020. Dravid won the series.

In 2021 she appeared in the TV series Creamerie.
