Anjong of Goryeo (died 24 July 996[5]), personal name Wang Uk or sometimes spelled as Wang Wook (Korean왕욱; Hanja王郁) was a formal name bestowed to the Korean Royal Prince of Goryeo as the only son of Taejo of Goryeo and Queen Sinseong.[6] He was the biological father of Hyeonjong of Goryeo.[7]

It was presumed that he was born between c. 936 to 943. He was said to had both of handsome in virtue and appearance. On the other hand, there was a theory said if Anjong's birth mother was not Queen Sinseong, but Lady Daeryangwon (대량원부인) who was Taejo's 13rd wife.[citation needed]

Aftermath with Queen Heonjeong[]

After King Gyeongjong's death in 981, Queen Heonjeong started to lived in the Palace and Wang-uk lived in her neighborhood, so, they two often came and went, also spent more time together.[8] Eventually, Heonjeong had a son with him named Wang Sun (왕순; the future Hyeonjong of Goryeo).[9] At this time, those people around them were all quiet and the courts was unaware of this.

One day, Wang's slave set fire to his house and reported it to Seongjong of Goryeo (Queen Heonjeong's older brother) and then Seongjong came to Wang's house for condolences. Not long after Seongjong know this, the Queen returned to her house and suddenly felt labor pains, then passed away during childbirth. After her death, Wang-uk was exiled to Sasu-hyeon (nowadays is Sacheon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea) because of his affair with the widowed queen.

Later life[]

After Queen Heonjeong's death, Wang-sun was entrusted to the one of King Seongjong's nanny and under his command too, Sun entered the palace. Meanwhile, Sun always called him "Father, Father" ('아비, 아비'), that means if Sun missed and wanna see his father.[4] While heard this, Seongjong then wept and choose to sent Sun to his biological father, Wang-uk. Together, they lived in Gwiyangji until his death on 24 July 996. Sooner, Sun returned to Gaegyeong in 997 and had a tumultuous time until he ascended the throne.[4]
