    Released: April 2, 2021

BTS, the Best (stylized in all caps) is the second Japanese compilation album (fourth overall) by South Korean boy band BTS. It was released on June 16, 2021 through Universal Music Japan and Def Jam Recordings. The album was a huge commercial success, reaching number one in Japan's Oricon Chart and went on to become the first ever Korean male group to surpass 1 million albums mark in Japan alone and also had the biggest first week sales for an album in Japan in 2021.[1][2]

Background[]

BTS announced the release of a new Japanese song, "Film Out" on February 16, 2021.[3] The song was written by BTS member Jungkook in collaboration with Iyori Shimizu, the vocalist of Japanese rock power trio Back Number.[4] It is slated to serve as the ending theme song of the movie Signal the Movie Cold Case Investigation Unit (2021).[5] On March 26, the band released the music video teaser of the song and simultaneously announced the release of a new Japanese-language album, BTS, the Best.[6] The track list was also announced simultaneously.[7] The album contains all of the band's previous Japanese releases since 2017, while including their English-language 2020 single, "Dynamite" as a bonus track.[8] Seven versions of the album had been announced with various supportive materials in each version, such as different posters, photo cards and artwork.[9]

Commercial performance[]

BTS, the Best debuted atop the Oricon Daily Album Chart, selling 571,589 physical copies in a single day, becoming the best-selling album of the year.[10][11] It debuted atop the Oricon Albums Chart for the week ending June 28, 2021, selling 782,369 copies.[12] The album spent three consecutive weeks atop the chart, selling more than 885,000 copies.[13] The album furtermore topped Oricon's Digital Album Chart, selling 7,603 digital copies in it's release week.[14] On Billboard Japan's Hot Albums chart, BTS, the Best entered atop, selling an estimated 807,000 units.[15][16]
