The Bangalore high-speed rail link (HSRL) was a proposed railway to connect Bangalore's city centre with Kempegowda International Airport (BIA) at Devanahalli. The rail line was to have run along the easten side of National Highway 44, and cover a distance of 33 kilometres from MG Road to BIA.[2] The project cost was estimated to be 57.67 billion (US$770 million).

The project was cancelled in 2013 in favor of an extension of the Namma Metro.[3]

Plan[]

Four stations viz., Cubbon Road (City Center check-in station), Hebbal (Check-in station), Yelahanka (pick-up station) and Bangalore International Airport Terminal Station have been planned along the stretch.[4][5][6]

The line was expected to carry air travellers at speeds up to 160 km/h between the airport and MG Road with a travel time of approximately 25 minutes.[7]

Replacement by metro link[]

In June 2012, Karnataka chief secretary S.V. Ranganath, asked BMRC to prepare a note on including an extension to the airport in Phase II of Namma Metro. Under the new plan, the Gottigere – Nagavara will be extended to the airport.[7] The extension, from Nagavara to BIA, is estimated to cost 50 billion (US$660 million) and will be implemented in PPP mode.[8] Initially, the travel time is expected to be 44 minutes, but may go up to 55 minutes as more stations are added on the route. Although the high-speed rail link can carry passengers to the airport in 29 minutes, it will be more expensive to build than the metro extension.[9] Metro link is expected to become operational from 2025 onwards.
