Vibuthipura Lake (Kannada: ವಿಭೂತಿಪುರ ಸರೋವರ) is a lake in the suburb of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, in the southeast of the city of Bengaluru. Lake is the part of Bangalore Tank Network and was connected to Doddanekundi Lake.[1]

History[]

Lake was earlier spread across 43 acres which was then maintained by Forest Department. It was home for many species such as fish, migratory birds and other aquatic animals. Currently it is under Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike(BBMP). There is a historic structure with 4 pillars on the eastern side of the lake built in stones. Lake area started shrinking due to urbanization and land encroachment. Residential and commercial activities in the area have resulted in increasing the silt deposition and have caused loss of underground water recharge and water holding capacity.[2]

Restoration[]

Residential associations along with Members of the Vibhutipura Kere Abhivridhi Mattu Samrakshane Samiti (VIKAS) have started a campaign in 2015 for the restoration of lake and lakebed. As a result of the protest, BBMP have allocated 2.5 Cr budget for cleaning the lake and for the diversion of sewage outlets. Later the entire lake area has been fenced and a joggers track is made around the lake.[3]
