Bangladesh Railway Class 2200 is a class of meter-gauge diesel-electric locomotives of Bangladesh operated by Bangladesh Railway.[1][2] Total 41 locos of this class entered the fleet of the then Eastern Bengal Railway in 1961 and 1963.[3]

Upon introduction, these locos were used in almost all types of passenger trains. But due to their old age, they are not used in passenger trains anymore. Instead, they are now only used in shunting.

Builders details[]

Class 2200 locos were manufactured by General Motors Diesel (GMD) in London, Canada. Their model is EMD GL8. These 41 locos came to the then East Pakistan in 2 phases:

  • 1961: 2201–2221
  • 1963: 2222–2941

Technical details[]

Class 2200 locos use the EMD 8-567B as prime mover. Their power is 875 hp and wheel arrangement is A1A-A1A.

Classification and numbering[]

The number-series/class of these locos is 2200 and are numbered from 2201 to 2241. Their class-name/specification is "MEG-9". Here, M = Meter-gauge, E = Diesel-electric, G = GMD and 9 = 9 × 100 = 900 hp (actually 875 hp).
