Barbatos

Barbatos (Latin: barbatus, "bearded") is the 8th Spirit named in The Lesser Key of Solomon (Ars Goetia), appearing as an Earl and Great Duke of Hell. He is depicted as an Archer or Philosopher with several brass horns. He supposedly rules over thirty legions of demons which are divided and ruled by Barbatos' King Companions.[1]

He is described as giving the ability to understand the speech of animals and birds, to appear in Sagittarius, to at one point have been virtuous(and still retain some of that virtue), to know everything in the past and future, and to be adept at making peace between friends.[2]

In the Grand Grimoire, Barbatos is named as the 6th of the 18 spirits who serve the seven superior spirits, namely, he is under the command of Satanachia along with Pruslas and Aamon.[3]

In popular culture[]

  • In the anime series Gundam, there is a mobile suit known as "ASW-G-08 Gundam Barbatos".
  • In the 2020 game Genshin Impact, Barbatos is one of the names of the Anemo (wind) Archon and god of the nation Mondstadt.
  • In the 2019 Otome game Obey Me!, one of the demons with whom the players can interact with and raise their relationship with is named Barbatos.
  • In the 2017 DC comics made event called Dark Nights: Metal. Barbatos is revealed to the main villain and created an army of evil Batman to destroy the universe
