Belle (竜とそばかすの姫, Ryū to Sobakasu no Hime, literally "The Dragon and Freckled Princess") is a 2021 Japanese animated science fantasy film written and directed by Mamoru Hosoda and produced by Studio Chizu. The film premiered on July 15, 2021 at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival,[2] where it was well-received by critics with a standing ovation that lasted 14 minutes.[3] It was theatrically released in Japan on July 16, 2021.

Premise[]

Suzu is a 17-year-old high school student that lives in both the real world of Japan and the virtual world known as "U", where she uses the name 'Belle'.

While Studio Chizu worked on the project, it had help from veteran Disney animator & character designer Jin Kim and Michael Camacho on the design of Belle and studio Cartoon Saloon for the background work of the world of U.[8][9]
