Yoasobi (stylized in all caps) is a Japanese music duo composed of Vocaloid (voice synthesizer software) producer Ayase and singer-songwriter Ikura (Lilas Ikuta). The group has released songs based on short stories posted on Monogatary.com, a website operated by Sony Music Entertainment Japan, later also from various novels and book tie-ups. The duo debuted with the single "Yoru ni Kakeru" in December 2019. It became successful on the music chart in Japan with charting atop for three consecutive weeks and 2020 year-end on Billboard Japan Hot 100. Their debut extended play The Book was released in January 2021 and reached number two on both Oricon Albums Chart and Billboard Japan Hot Albums.

Name[]

The name "Yoasobi" originates from the Japanese word 夜遊び, meaning "nightlife". Ayase, who is a producer of the group said he named it as a wish that he could take on various playful challenges by comparing the appearance of acting as an individual to the appearance of daytime and the appearance of two people acting as Yoasobi as the appearance of the night.[1] The group has a slogan "novel into music" (小説を音楽にする, shōsetsu o ongaku ni suru).[2][3]

History[]

2019–2020: Formation and rising up with "Yoru ni Kakeru"[]

Both members of Yoasobi had active music careers before forming the group. Ayase gained a following on the video hosting site Niconico since his first upload on December 24, 2018, a song titled "Sentensei Assault Girl" (先天性アサルトガール, Sentensei Asaruto Gāru). On November 23, 2019, he released an extended play, Ghost City Tokyo (幽霊東京, Yūrei Tōkyō), which reached third on iTunes' album chart.[4][5] Lilas Ikuta (幾田りら, Ikuta Rira),[6] performing under the name Ikura, had already released two extended plays: Rerise in 2017 and Jukebox in 2019.[7]

The first single released by the duo was "Yoru ni Kakeru", based on Mayo Hoshino's short story Thanatos no Yūwaku hosted on Monogatary.com. The music video was released first on November 16, 2019, where it broke 10 million views in five months on YouTube as well as being popular on TikTok.[8] It was subsequently released as a single on December 15, 2019, where it topped the popularity charts on both Spotify and Line Music.[9] More than five months after its release, the song atop the Billboard Japan Hot 100 for three consecutive weeks.[10] The song also tops the year-end chart of the Japan Hot 100, become the first song not released on CD to top the year-end chart,[11] and received a double platinum certification for digital release and a platinum certification for streaming by Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ).[12][13]

Following the success of their first release, the duo released their second single, "Ano Yume o Nazotte" on January 18, 2020, based on Sōta Ishiki's Yume no Shizuku to Hoshi no Hana.[14] On April 20, the duo released the teaser for their third single, "Halzion", based on Shunki Hashizume's Soredemo, Happy End. "Halzion" marked the first time that Yoasobi collaborated with a professional novelist, whereas the first two were amateur writers. The song was released on May 11[15] as a promotional project by Suntory to advertise their new energy drink named Zone.[16]

In the second half of the year, Yoasobi released their fourth single, "Tabun", on July 20. The song was based on the short story of the same name by Shinano.[17] Their fifth single, "Gunjō" was released September 1. The song collaborated with a manga, Blue Period for Bourbon's Alfort Mini Chocolate advertisement. The song was based on Alfort's television advertisement story text Ao o Mikata ni.[18] On December 18, the duo released their sixth single, "Haruka", based on Osamu Suzuki's novel, Tsuki Ōji.[19] On December 31, 2020, they concluded and debuted in 71st NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen and performed "Yoru ni Kakeru", which is also their first live performance.[20]

2021–present: The Book[]

On January 6, 2021, Yoasobi released their first extended play and first physical release The Book, including the six previous singles and three new songs, "Encore" as a promotional single, "Epilogue" as an intro, and "Prologue" as an outro,[21] which peaked at number two on both Oricon Albums Chart[22] and Billboard Japan Hot Albums,[23] and atop Oricon Digital Albums Chart for five consecutive weeks,[24] and received a gold certification for physical release by RIAJ.[25]

Yoasobi's "Kaibutsu" and "Yasashii Suisei" featured as an opening and ending theme song of the season 2 of Beastars (logo illustrated)

The duo also released their seventh single, "Kaibutsu", on the same day with the EPs.[26] The song has been featured as the opening theme song for the second season of the anime television series Beastars.[27] On January 20, the duo opened their fan club website Club Yoasobi (CLUB 夜遊),[28] and released the anime's ending theme song and duo's eighth single, "Yasashii Suisei".[29] Their first concert, Keep Out Theater was held on February 14[30] at the inside of the building under construction at the former site of Shinjuku Milano for an online audience of 40,000 people.[31] "Kaibutsu" and "Yasashii Suisei" were combined and released as a double A-side CD single on March 24,[32] which peaked at number two on the Oricon Singles Chart.[33]

The duo released the ninth single for the Fuji TV's morning show Mezamashi TV, titled "Mō Sukoshi Dake" on May 10, and was based on a novel Meguru, which won the Yoasobi Contest Vol.3 with Mezamashi TV by Chiharu.[34] "Sangenshoku", the tenth single for NTT Docomo's mobile service Ahamo's advertisement, was based on a novel RGB by scriptwriter Yūichirō Komikado.[35] It was released on July, 2, the same day with the English version of "Yoru ni Kakeru", titled "Into the Night",[36] and the stand-alone single version of "Encore".[37] The English version of "Sangenshoku", titled "RGB" was released on July 16,[38] and "Kaibutsu", titled "Monster" on July 30.[39]

The duo released the eleventh single that collaborated with Tokyo FM's radio show owned by Japan Post Service, Sunday's Post, and based on Hatsune's letter Ongaku-san e, titled "Loveletter" on August 9.[40][41] The duo also has plans to release the twelfth single "Taishō Roman" on September 15, based on Natsumi's novel Taishō Romance, which won Yoasobi Contest Vol.2,[42][43] and songs for NHK's new SDGs children program series, Hirogare! Irotoridori[44] and the stage Moshi mo Inochi ga Kaketara.[45]
