Bismita Gogoi (née Saikia; born 1 January 1972) is an Indian politician from the state of Assam. She was a Member of the Assam Legislative Assembly from the Indian National Congress for Khumtai. She was made Minister of Cultural Affairs, Handloom, Textile, Sericulture and Backward Classes Welfare during a cabinet reshuffle[1]
Early life and education[]
Bismita Gogoi was born on 1 January 1972 to the late Tokheswar Saikia and Ahalya Saikia. She was born in Moran.[2] She is M.A in Sociology (1996) from Dibrugarh University. She has also completed LLB from RKB Law College under Dibrugarh University in the year 1999.[3]
Personal life[]
She married Rupak Kr Gogoi on 12 December 1997. Her husband was the son of Jiba Kanta Gogoi, a former speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly.[4] They had no children. Her husband was killed after he was attacked by a mob of labourers.[5]
Political career[]
She was elected to the assembly in 2011 for Khumtai, succeeding Probin Gogoi. She secured 41123 votes, defeated her nearest opponent by 18389 votes.[6]
Minister of state of Cultural Affairs , Handloom, Textile, Sericulture and Backward Classes Welfare[]
She became Minister of Cultural Affairs, Handloom, Textile, Sericulture and Backward Classes Welfare succeeding Pranati Phukan, under Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.[7] As a minister, she helped introduce Mumai Tamuly Barbarua Karna Sanskriti Abhijan, an entrepreneurial scheme which she ran for 3 years. In 2015 she oversaw the completion of the Bhupen Hazarika Memorial. She also helped to bring in Sustainable Urbanism International to try to make Majuli a UNESCO world heritage site.[8]
Post Ministerial career[]
She was one of 10 cabinet ministers who lost in the 2016 Assam Legislative Assembly Election.[9] She lost to the current Member of Assam Legislative Assembly for Khumtai, Mrinal Saikia. She again contested in the 2021 Assam Legislative Assembly Election and again lost to Saikia.[6]
