Jiba Kanta Gogoi (1939 - 2 July 2002) was an Indian National Congress politician from Assam. He served as Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly[1] and twice as minister in the Hiteswar Saikia’s cabinets.[2]

Political career[]

He was elected as Member of the Assam Legislative Assembly thrice for Khumtai.[3] He became speaker in 1992, a minister of state in 1984 and a minister for finance in 1992.

Personal life and Death[]

He and his wife had 2 sons. His son Rupak Gogoi was killed in 2005 but Rupak married Bismita Gogoi, who also became the Member of the Assam Legislative Assembly for Khumtai. Jiba Kanta Gogoi died after a prolonged illness, aged 62.[4] He, at the time, was still a sitting Congress MLA. Many politicians went to the residence of Gogoi and paid tribute by placing wreaths on his body. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, Speaker Prithibi Majhi and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Pawan Singh Ghatowar, all expressed grief at the loss of Gogoi.[5]
