Bless your heart

"Bless your heart" is a phrase that is common in the Southern United States.[1][2] The phrase has multiple meanings. It may be used to express genuine sympathy or as a precursor to an insult to soften the blow. However, it may also be used in an insulting way meaning "you are dumb or otherwise impaired, but you can't help it" by individuals who wish to "be sweet” and do not wish to "act ugly".[3][4]

Notable examples[]

In 2016, Nikki Haley, then governor of South Carolina, received extensive press coverage for saying the phrase in response to an attack by presidential candidate Donald Trump.[5][6][7]

Speaking about ex-husband Ben Affleck's large back tattoo of a rising phoenix, Jennifer Garner said, "You know what we would say in my hometown about that? 'Bless his heart.'"[8]

In You (Season 2), Calvin uses this phrase to Joe Goldberg when Forty decides to change the look of book store originally by Joe.[citation needed]
