Montgomery played four years of college soccer at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte between 2015 and 2019. During his time at UNC Charlotte, Montgomery was named a First Team All-American and Conference USA Defender of the Year.[2]

In 2018, Montgomery made the men's semifinalist list for the Hermann Trophy, an annual award for college soccer players.[3]

Montgomery was released by Dallas following their 2020 season.[6]

On December 13, 2020, Minnesota United acquired Montgomery's rights from Dallas in exchange for a fourth-round 2022 MLS SuperDraft pick and potentially $50,000 of General Allocation Money.[7] Montgomery would be loaned to USL Championship side San Diego Loyal for the 2021 season.[8] Upon completion of the 2021 season, Montgomery's option for the 2022 season would be picked up by Minnesota.[9]
