Carlota Guerrero (born 1989 in Barcelona) is a Spanish artist, photographer, filmmaker, and art director.[1] She is known for exploring themes of femininity and body autonomy.[2][3]

Biography[]

Carlota Guerrero was born and brought up in Barcelona. She took in an interest in the visual arts early on in her adolescence but only started teaching herself photographer in her early 20s, when she was gifted a camera by a friend.

Guerrero rose to fame in 2016 after Beyoncé's sister, Solange, discovered Guerrero's photography on her Instagram and hired her to capture the cover for her third album, A Seat at the Table.[4] The duo would go on to collaborate on a number of music videos and another album cover for 2019's When I Get Home.[5][6][7]

She has photographed Spanish stars such as Penelope Cruz,[8] Arca, Sita Abellan,[9][10] and Rosalia,[11] in addition to celebrities like actress Emilia Clarke and poet Rupi Kaur. The photographer has also worked with various brands and fashion labels, such as Dior, Nike, , Givenchy, Mugler, and Helmut Lang.[12][13]

In 2019, on the occasion of the contemporary art fair Art Basel in Miami, Guerrero staged a performance piece that emulated an orgy of 30 people, in collaboration with label Desigual. The performance show was highly praised and caused a viral sensation.[14][15]

In February 2021, attempting to delve into how racism affected Spain, Guerrero captured Mujeres negras at the National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC). The piece portrays an ensemble of black models as if they were sculptures, surrounded by the marble bodies of the art gallery. Proceeds raised were used to help refugee and immigrant women who are "unable to prosper due to structural racism."[16]

In May 2021, she released her first monographic book, Tengo un Dragón Dentro del Corazón (which translates to I Have a Dragon Inside My Heart) with Prestel.
