Champagne Problems is the eighth studio album by Romanian singer Inna. Its two parts, Champagne Problems #DQH1 and Champagne Problems #DQH2, were released for digital download and streaming by Global Records on 7 January and 11 March 2022, respectively. The first part has been described as a primarily dance-pop record, also encompassing occasional Latin pop and reggaeton influences. Champagne Problems was created over the course of 16 days in a mansion where Inna resided with several Romanian songwriters and producers, including Sebastian Barac, Marcel Botezan, David Ciente, Alexandru Cotoi, Minelli, Moa Pettersson Hammar and Gustav Nyström.
To document the progress made, Inna uploaded daily YouTube vlogs that constituted the second season of her Dance Queen's House series, a format whose first season yielded in the release of Heartbreaker (2020). Commercially, Champagne Problems #DQH1 peaked at numbers 72 and 81 on the UK Album Downloads Chart and Germany Album Download Chart, respectively. In March 2022, Inna performed several songs from Champagne Problems #DQH1 and Champagne Problems #DQH2 during a YouTube concert to celebrate seven million followers on the platform.[1]
Background and creation[]
On 27 November 2020, Inna released her seventh studio album, Heartbreaker;[2] it had been created during a three-week period at a rented Bucharest mansion with two recording studios, in which the singer resided with Romanian songwriters and producers Sebastian Barac, Marcel Botezan, David Ciente, Alexandru Cotoi and Minelli. Inna documented the progress made during daily vlogs on her YouTube channel—which constituted the first season of her series called Dance Queen's House.[3][4][5] A second season of the same format was used to work on Champagne Problems, with the sessions lasting for 16 days in late 2021 and Ciente being excluded in favor of the foreign composers Moa Pettersson Hammar and Gustav Nyström, who were present on selected dates.[6][7][8]
The vlogs ran from 6 to 21 December 2021.[7][9] By the third episode, 20 songs had already been created to select from for the album,[10] and the fourth episode revealed that "De dragul tău", a promotional single released by Inna earlier in 2021, had also been recorded during the sessions for Champagne Problems.[11][12] The final episode on 21 December 2021 presented a pre-order link and unveiled the release date of 7 January 2022 for the album's first part Champagne Problems #DQH1,[9] on which it was issued for digital download and streaming by Global Records.[13] The same label also handled the release for the second part, Chamapgne Problems #DQH2, on 11 March 2022.[14]
Composition and reception[]
Champagne Problems #DQH1 has been identified as a dance-pop effort with occasional reggaeton and Latin pop influences by Matjaž Ambrožič of 24UR, and is entirely performed in English unlike her past works. Ambrožič praised the album's first part as being "solid" and a "pleasing rhythmic pump", further commending the nature of its melodies and Inna's vocal delivery.[15] Adevărul's Maria-Alexandru Mortu categorized the opener "Always on My Mind" as a dance song, speaking highly of its "catchy" refrain and "honest" lyrics,[16] while Jon Caramanica of the New York Times saw the title track as being "immaculate club-pop: ecstatic, bubbly, heartless".[17] Musially, "Champagne Problems" is meant to resemble the spicy taste and is the result of a challenge presented to Inna and her team during Dance Queen's House.[9]
Commercially, Champange Problems #DQH1 debuted and peaked at number 72 on the UK Album Downloads Chart published by the Official Charts Company (OCC) for the week ending 20 January 2022;[18] this became Inna's first entry in a British album chart since 2009's Hot.[19] It also reached number 81 on GfK Entertainment's Album Download Chart on 17 January 2022 as the singer's first-ever charting record in Germany.[20]
