The City University of New York (CUNY) Public Safety Department (PSD) is responsible for safety and security at the 26 CUNY campuses and CUNY facilities.[1]

The New York City Police Department is the primary Policing and investigation agency within the New York City as per the NYC Charter (law), which includes all CUNY campuses and facilities.

CUNY has 26 Colleges, each has its own public safety website with information and advice.[1]

Officers[]

CUNY Public Safety Department is made up of two types of officer:

  • Public Safety Officer - armed and unarmed New York State Peace Officers
  • Security Officer - licensed, unarmed New York State security guards.

Powers and Authority[]

Public Safety Officers are NYS Peace Officers with limited authority under Article 2, §2.10, sub 25 of New York State Criminal Procedure Law.[1]

Uniform[]

The CUNY PSD uniforms mirror other New York City law enforcement agencies, with a dark blue uniform. This consists of:

  • Security Officers (non-sworn) wear light blue shirts, a square shield and a different patch.
  • In the summer everyday uniform shirts are short-sleeved and worn open at the collar, with no tie.[2]

Formal Uniform[]

  • Dark blue shirt (or white for senior officers), with PSD shield, patch and "CUNY" insignia, as well as rank (if any)
  • Dark blue tie
  • Dark blue trousers
  • Dark blue peaked cap with capbadge
  • Dark blue tunic with patches

Everyday Uniform[]

  • Dark blue shirt (or white for senior officers), with PSD shield, patch and "CUNY" and College-specific insignia, as well as rank (if any)
  • Dark blue tie
  • Dark blue trousers
  • Dark blue peaked cap with capbadge or the NYC police hat (Russian style) with capbadge[6]
  • Dark blue NATO jumper
  • Dark blue jacket.[7]

Operations/Cycling Uniform[]

  • Dark blue/light blue polo shirt with printed patches and shields
  • Light blue sports jacket
  • Appropriate safety equipment (helmet)

Black boots or formal shoes are worn.

CUNY PSD use a wide variety of vehicles, including cars, vans, pedal cycles and ATVs for patrol, including:

Equipment[]

CUNY Public Safety Officers are unarmed, A few supervisor are authorized to carry a handgun. These officers must be authorized by the campus president and license by the New York City Police Dept (pistol license section) and are only permitted to carry while working only. All CUNY Public Safety Officers carry an expandable baton, handcuffs, a flashlight, a radio that is directly linked to other officers, and a bullet resistant vest
