Collabs is the eigth extended play (EP) by American singer Halsey, released on July 31, 2020 by Capitol Records. The release marks Halsey's first EP since Room 93 (2014) that is not a live session or remix EP. It is also Halsey's first compilation EP. Collabs was released with no prior announcement and features six songs Halsey had previously released that were collaborations with other artists. Some of the songs are included on her third studio album Manic (2020) while others were originally non-album releases. The EP features appearances by recording artists Dominic Fike, Alanis Morissette, Suga of BTS, Juice Wrld, and Marshmello.[1]

Background[]

On July 30, 2020 a fan pointed out on Twitter that a random extended play had appeared under the "Compilations" section on Halsey's Spotify profile under the release date of January 15, 2020. This caused speculation and prompted a response from Halsey herself. She claimed it was something the record label did, and that she herself did not really know it was going to happen.[2] The EP was released to other streaming platforms on July 31, 2020.[3]

Songs[]

All of the songs on the EP are collaborations between Halsey and other artists. The EP was preceded by the release two singles and one promotional single.

Singles[]

The first single released was "Be Kind", released on May 1, 2020, with American producer Marshmello.[4] The song is an "emotional" EDM track[5] song that describes trust issues in romantic relationships.[6] The song peaked in the top 20 in 8 different countries and the top 40 in many more. The music video, directed by Hannah Lux Davis, was released nearly two months later on July 28, 2020 and currently has over 33 million views.[7]

The second single, "Life's a Mess" with late American rapper Juice Wrld, was released on July 6, 2020. The song served as the third single for Juice Wrld's posthumous third studio album, Legends Never Die (2020).[8] The song peaked at numbers 8, 9, and 11 in Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom respectively, and also charted in 16 other countries. The official song visualizer, directed by Chad Ross, was released alongside the song and features artist David Garibaldi painting a picture of Juice Wrld and Halsey together.[9]

Promotional single[]

On December 6, 2019, Halsey released "Suga's Interlude" with Korean rapper Suga as the third promotional single for Manic. The song was released simultaneously with the album's second promotional single, "Finally // Beautiful Stranger".[10][11] "Suga's Interlude" serves as one of three interlude tracks on Manic, all three of which are featured on Collabs, and marks the second time Halsey collaborated with a member of BTS, the first being when she featured on the group's 2019 single, "Boy with Luv". The song received minimal promotion, due to the release of the "Finally // Beautiful Stranger" music video and BTS promoting new group projects instead.[12]

Other songs[]

On January 9, 2019, the Juice Wrld remix of Halsey's Manic lead single "Without Me" was released. The song was one of two official "Without Me" remixes. Halsey said she asked Juice Wrld to do a remix because he inspired the "vibe" of the song.[13]

On January 17, 2020, Halsey released Manic. In addition to "Suga's Interlude", two other interlude tracks were featured on the album. The first, "Dominic's Interlude", featured American singer and rapper Dominic Fike. The interlude was given a mini music video used during the Manic World Tour between Halsey's performances of "Forever ... (Is a Long Time)" and "I Hate Everybody". The second interlude track, "Alanis' Interlude", featuring Canadian-American singer Alanis Morissette, is a bisexual anthem about sexual freedom. All three interludes would later be featured on Collabs.
