The Crockett Hotel is a hotel in San Antonio, Texas, which, during 2020, is closed.[2]

View over Alamo grounds from the hotel

Built in 1909,[3] one of three hotels built in downtown San Antonio that year,[4] it overlooks The Alamo, and is a San Antonio historic landmark itself.

It is located on the Battle of the Alamo grounds, on part of the original Alamo grounds, on the location of 's store.[5]

It was designed by Padgett. It was built with six stories in its main wing, and "a cornice with wide modillioned eaves" tops that, but a seventh story was added in a 1927 renovation designed by . There is a rounded corner entrance to the building at Bonham and Crockett streets, and the west facade of the building "is broken into two planes following the configuration of the block."[5]

It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977 as a contributing building in the Alamo Plaza Historic District.[5] At the time (1977) it was owned by the local Oddfellows' Lodge, which occupied the fifth floor, including hosting, since 1961, the .[5]

It has been a member of Historic Hotels of America since 2010.[3]

Closure[]

It closed in March 2020 due to loss of business during travel restrictions and other effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, in which museums, theme parks, and other attractions in the San Antonio area were closed. According to general manager Bill Brendel '“Occupancy was just too low. It was not sustainable, and not enough expense cuts are possible to operate”.[6] The closing at first was announced to be temporary, until "early May".[7] Then in May, it was announced that it would not reopen until October or November. It is owned by 1859 Historic Hotels, based in Galveston, which also owns the 1859-built Menger Hotel, located across E. Crockett Street, also adjacent to The Alamo property. It was then planned that The Menger would reopen in late June,[8] (and in December 2020 the Menger is in fact open[9]).

Davy Crockett Hotel in Crockett, Houston County[]

There was a Davy Crockett Hotel located in Crockett, seat of Houston County, Texas, which operated from 1927 until it was destroyed by a fire in 1972. It was owned by the Crockett Hotel Co. A Texas historic plaque, titled "Site of the Crockett Hotel", marks the site.[10]
