The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (abbreviated RHOBH) is an American reality television series that premiered on October 14, 2010, on Bravo. Developed as the sixth series in The Real Housewives franchise, it has aired eleven seasons and focuses on the personal and professional lives of several women residing in Beverly Hills, California.

For the upcoming twelfth season, it was announced that the cast would consist of Kyle Richards, Lisa Rinna, Erika Girardi, Dorit Kemsley, Garcelle Beauvais, Sutton Stracke, Crystal Kung Minkoff, and Diana Jenkins, while Kathy Hilton and Sheree Zampino would appear from time to time as "friends of the housewives," as these were called. Previous cast members had included original housewives Camille Grammer Meyer, Taylor Armstrong, Adrienne Maloof, Kim Richards, and Lisa Vanderpump, and also subsequent housewives Brandi Glanville, Yolanda Hadid, Carlton Gebbia, Joyce Giraud de Ohoven, Eileen Davidson, Kathryn Edwards, Teddi Mellencamp Arroyave, and Denise Richards.

The success of the show resulted in the creation of the spin-off Vanderpump Rules.

Overview and casting

Seasons 1–4

Season 1

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills was announced in March of 2010 as the sixth series in The Real Housewives franchise.[1] The first season premiered on October 14, 2010, and starred Kyle Richards, Adrienne Maloof, Kim Richards, Lisa Vanderpump, Camille Grammer and Taylor Armstrong.[2] The series received a 2011 Critics Choice Award for best reality series.[3]

Season 2

The second season premiered on September 5, 2011, with Brandi Glanville and Dana Wilkey introduced as what were called "friends of the housewives."[4] The second season was re-edited after the death of Taylor Armstrong's husband, Russell Armstrong, who died by suicide on August 15, 2011.[5] Meyer left the main cast after the second season.

Season 3

The third season aired on November 5, 2012. Glanville was upgraded to a main cast member and Yolanda Foster was added to the series. Marisa Zanuck and Faye Resnick were introduced as friends of the housewives, while Meyer was reduced to being a friend of them.[6][7] Adrienne Maloof did not return for the fourth season after she refused to attend the season three reunion.[8]

Season 4

The fourth season premiered on November 4, 2013, with Carlton Gebbia and Joyce Giraud joining the cast. But Armstrong was reduced to being a guest.[9][10] Giraud and Gebbia were not asked back after the fourth season.[11]

Seasons 5–8

Season 5

The fifth season premiered on November 18, 2014, featuring Lisa Rinna and Eileen Davidson as the new housewives.[12] Maloof, Meyer, and Armstrong participated in that season as guests.[13] Kim Richards and Glanville were not asked back for the sixth season as regular cast members.[14][15]

Season 6

Erika Jayne and Kathryn Edwards joined the show's sixth season which premiered on December 1, 2015. Kim Richards, Meyer, Armstrong, Resnick, Maloof, and Glanville returned in guest appearances, alongside Bethenny Frankel of The Real Housewives of New York City.[16] The season served as the final season for Hadid, and the only season for Edwards.[17][18]

Season 7

The seventh season premiered on December 6, 2016, with new cast member, Dorit Kemsley. Eden Sassoon joined the show in a recurring capacity, whilst Kim Richards and Meyer also made regular appearances throughout the season.[19] Davidson and Sassoon both left the series after the seventh season.[20][21]

Season 8

The eighth season premiered on December 19, 2017, with the addition of Teddi Mellencamp Arroyave as a new cast member. Meyer returned as a friend of the housewives, while Davidson, Resnick, and Maloof appeared as guests.[22][23]

Seasons 9–present

Season 9

The ninth season premiered on February 12, 2019. It featured all six cast members from the previous season, with Denise Richards joining the cast. Meyer returned once again as a friend of the housewives, while Kim Richards, Glanville, and Resnick all appeared as guests.[24] But Vanderpump left the show after the ninth season.[25]

Season 10

Garcelle Beauvais joined the cast, as a main cast member, in the tenth season, which premiered on April 15, 2020. Sutton Stracke also debuted in the show, as a friend of the housewives.[26] Meyer, Kim Richards, Maloof, Glanville, Davidson, and Resnick also made guest appearances during the season.[27][28][29] Denise Richards announced her departure from the show after the tenth season, while Mellencamp was dismissed from the cast;[30][31] the grounds for Mellencamp's dismissal were not made fully clear at the time.

Season 11

The eleventh season, which premiered on May 19, 2021, featured Crystal Kung Minkoff joining the show and Stracke joining the main cast,[32] while Kathy Hilton rejoined the cast in a "friend of the housewives" capacity. Former housewife Mellencamp Arroyave made a guest appearance in the season.

Season 12 (as announced)

In December of 2021, it was confirmed that the entire cast of the eleventh season would return for the twelfth season, and that joining them would be new housewife Diana Jenkins and new friend of the housewives Sheree Zampino.[33][34]

Broadcast history

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills airs regularly on Bravo in the United States;[35] most episodes are approximately forty-two to forty-four minutes in length,[36] and are broadcast in standard definition and high definition.[37] Since its premiere, the series has alternated airing on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings and has been frequently shifted between the 8:00, 9:00, and 10:00 PM timeslots.[35]

The franchise consists of multiple figures in popular culture and media publicity prior to the show's airing.

Season 1

In Season 1, sisters Kim and Kyle Richards, both actresses, were introduced as former child stars. Kyle had starred alongside Jamie Lee Curtis in the 1978 horror film Halloween, as Lindsey Wallace. Additionally, Kyle Richards had starred in Little House on the Prairie, The Car alongside sister Kim Richards, and Fantasy Island. Kim had starred in multiple Disney films, such as the Witch Mountain film franchise, including Escape to Witch Mountain in 1975 and Return from Witch Mountain in 1978 as Tia Malone. Additionally, she had starred in Nanny and the Professor and Hello, Larry. The Richards sisters are the aunts of socialite, businesswoman and heiress Paris Hilton through half-sister Kathy Hilton, who recurs as a member of the show in guest and "friend" capacities throughout its airing. Alongside Kim and Kyle Richards, Camille Grammer, a past Club MTV dancer in the 1990s, was introduced as the wife of Kelsey Grammer, and as having starred in multiple acclaimed television and theatre productions, such as Frasier. Faye Resnick, introduced in Season 1 as a friend of Kyle Richards, was a prominent figure in the O.J. Simpson murder case as a close friend of victim Nicole Brown Simpson alongside Kris Jenner, prior to her writing of a tell-all book Nicole Brown Simpson: The Private Diary of a Life Interrupted about their friendship and her relationship with O.J. Simpson, which fell under public scrutiny for seemingly capitalizing from her friend's tragic death.

Season 2

Season 2 introduced former international model Brandi Glanville in a "friend" role (she would later appear in main and guest capacities) amid her highly publicised divorce from actor Eddie Cibrian as a result of his affair with singer LeAnn Rimes.

Seasons 3 and 4

Season 3 introduced Yolanda Hadid (then Foster), wife of Grammy-winning composer and producer David Foster. Covered in her featured seasons was the rise of the careers of supermodel daughters Gigi Hadid and Bella Hadid to high status.

Season 5

Season 5 introduced soap actresses Eileen Davidson and Lisa Rinna. Davidson, an Emmy award-winning actress, had starred in iconic soap roles in shows like Days of Our Lives, The Young and the Restless, and The Bold and the Beautiful. Rinna had also starred, in famous capacities, in Melrose Place and Days of Our Lives; likewise, she had hosted Soap Talk alongside Ty Treadway, and before joining the cast, she had starred in her own reality show, Harry Loves Lisa, with her husband Harry Hamlin, of Mad Men and L.A. Law.

Season 6

Season 6 introduced Kathryn Edwards, ex-wife of Marcus Allen. Both their names were bought up in Faye Resnick's controversial memoir regarding Nicole Brown Simpson and the O.J. Simpson murder case regarding their roles in hindsight in the murders. Edwards and Resnick clashed in an interaction regarding the latter's allegations.

Erika Girardi, known professionally as Erika Jayne, was also introduced in a main role. As the then wife of then-nationally acclaimed, but subsequently disgraced, lawyer Tom Girardi, who was 32 years her senior, Girardi had produced multiple Number 1 Billboard Dance Chart singles under her Erika Jayne stage name.

Season 9

Season 9 introduced actress Denise Richards of acclaimed films Wild Things, Starship Troopers, and The World Is Not Enough. She is the ex-wife of controversial actor Charlie Sheen.

Season 10

Season 10 introduced actress Garcelle Beauvais, of The Jamie Foxx Show, Coming to America, and Spider-Man: Homecoming. Her time on the show has since shown her venturing into new entertainment capacities such as becoming a host of talk show The Real.

Various

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills has drawn influence towards other parts of popular culture. The music video for Lady Gaga's 2014 song "G.U.Y." features then-cast members from the series.[38]

In 2019, a screen cap from the Season 2 episode "Malibu Beach Party from Hell" began trending as the "Woman yelling at a cat" meme, featuring cast members Taylor Armstrong and Kyle Richards followed by a picture of a cat sitting at a dinner table. It later won Meme of the Year at the Shorty Awards in 2020, with Armstrong virtually accepting the award.[39][40][41]

Brandi Glanville, Kyle Richards, and Camille Grammer appeared in the 2014 comedy film The Hungover Games, making cameo appearances as Housewives.[42]

In 2021, Brandi Glanville joined RHOA star Kenya Moore and RHOP star Candiace Dillard in a parody of the Real Housewives franchise on a show called Family Reunion.[43]
