Cyprus participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2015, held in Vienna, Austria. The Cypriot entry was selected through the Eurovision Song Project, a national selection similar to the structure and format of Sweden's national selection Melodifestivalen. The selection was intended to be organized by the Cypriot broadcaster Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC) and MAD TV. However, due to the low number of submissions, it was decided that the broadcasters would not collaborate for the selection. Cyprus was represented by the song "One Thing I Should Have Done", performed by Giannis Karagiannis and co-written by Karagiannis with Mike Connaris. Cyprus performed 15th in the second semi-final, held on 21 May 2015, and placed 6th, receiving 87 points. The country qualified for the grand final held two days later, where it placed 22nd with 11 points.

Background[]

Prior to the 2015 contest, Cyprus had participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 31 times since its first entry in 1981.[1] The country's best placing was fifth, which it achieved three times: in 1982 with the song "Mono I Agapi" performed by Anna Vissi, in 1997 with "Mana Mou" performed by Hara and Andreas Constantinou, and in 2004 with "Stronger Every Minute" performed by Lisa Andreas.[1] Cyprus' least successful result was in 1986 when it placed last with the song "Tora Zo" by Elpida, receiving only four points in total.[1] However, the country's worst finish in terms of points received was when it placed second to last in 1999 with "Tha'nai Erotas" by Marlain Angelidou, receiving only two.[1] In 2012, Cyprus selected Ivi Adamou to represent the country in Baku. Adamou achieved the 16th place in the final, making it their best result since 2004.[1][2] In 2013, Cyprus failed to qualify for the final after selecting Despina Olympiou to represent the country. In October 2013, the withdrawal from the 2014 contest was announced, with Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC) citing the public opinion regarding the 2012–2013 Cypriot financial crisis and budget restrictions as factors that influenced this decision.[3]

Before having an official confirmation from the Cypriot broadcaster, it was reported that Cyprus would be returning to the contest for the 60th anniversary.[4][5][6] On 31 May 2014, it was reported by London Greek Radio that CyBC was preparing a national selection.[7] Following rumors since late May 2014, it was officially confirmed on 14 July 2014 that Cyprus would be returning to the contest with a national selection being held to select their 32nd entry.[8][9] A trailer for the selection was first seen that same day.[10] Initially, the selection would be held by CyBC in collaboration with MAD TV.[11][12] However, in October 2014, it was announced that the collaboration was cancelled and that CyBC would organise the selection on their own, due to the low amount of song submissions received.[13]

Eurovision Song Project was the national final format developed by CyBC in order to select Cyprus' entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2015.[14] The format of the show was based on Melodifestivalen; the Swedish national selection for Eurovision.[4] The competition involved an eight-week-long process that commenced on 7 December 2014 and concluded with the final on 1 February 2015.[14][15] The shows took place at the CyBC studios in Nicosia and were hosted by Antri Karantoni, despite it previously being announced that Ivi Adamou received a proposition to be the host.[16][17] The shows were broadcast on RIK 1 and RIK Sat as well as online via the broadcaster's website cybc.cy. The final was also streamed online at the official Eurovision Song Contest website eurovision.tv.[18]

Format[]

The Eurovision Song Project consisted of 54 entries[a] competing over three phases: the auditions, the Eurochallenges and the final.

The process was as follows:

  • The auditions were aired between 7 December 2014 and 11 January 2015 and featured all 54 entries.[a] Each audition included: the Eurobox, where each artist talked about their life and connection to the contest along with a short a cappella cover of a Eurovision entry from the past 60 years; the Viewing Room, where relatives and friends of each artist watched their performance; and the Eurostudio, where the artists performed their song in front of a four-member judging panel. Only a one minute preview of which was shown to the audience. 20 artists progressed to the Eurochallenge.[19]
  • The Eurochallenges consisted of two shows held on 16 and 23 January 2015. During the first show, all 20 artists that advanced from the auditions were required to make a stage performance of their candidate songs in full without backing dancers and the judging panel eliminated 10 acts. During the second show, the remaining 10 artists each performed two songs: a piano cover version of a Eurovision Song Contest entry from the past 60 years as well as their candidate songs. The judging panel eliminated four acts and the top six progressed to the final.[19]
  • The final took place on 1 February 2015 which selected the winner from the remaining six entries equally amongst the judging panel and public televoting.[20]

Judges[]

During all phases, the four-member judging panel provided feedback to the competing artists and selecting entries to progress in the competition. The panel consisted of:[14][21]

During the Eurochallenge shows and the final, the judging panel was joined by two guest international judges of various members.[21]

Competing entries[]

Artists and composers were able to submit their entries to the broadcaster between 14 July 2014 and 5 September 2014 through an online submissions form.[22][23] The former were required to have Cypriot nationality or origin and were able to submit a maximum of two entries. Foreign songwriters were allowed to submit entries as long as they collaborated with at least one songwriter of Cypriot nationality or origin. At the conclusion of the deadline, more than 100 entries were received by CyBC, with submissions from Valanto Trifonos and former Cypriot Eurovision representatives including Dimos Beke (1993 and 2002) and Philipos Konstantinos (2002).[24][25] 60 entries were selected and announced on 20 October 2014, six of which later withdrew from the competition.[26]

Among the competing artists was former Cypriot Junior Eurovision representative Charis Savva (2008). Among the songwriters was former Cypriot Eurovision representative Constantinos Christoforou (1996, 2002, 2005). Mike Connaris composed the Cypriot Eurovision entry in 2004, Nasos Lambrianides co-composed the Cypriot Eurovision entry in 2010 and Zenon Zindilis co-composed the Cypriot Eurovision entry in 2013.[26]

The first Eurochallenge show aired on 16 January 2015. The 20 artists selected from the auditions competed and the judging panel selected 10 to progress in the competition. The two guest international judges were Christer Björkman (Head of Delegation for Sweden at Eurovision and supervisor of Melodifestivalen) and Dimitris Kontopoulos (Greek producer).[33]

The second Eurochallenge show aired on 23 January 2015. The 10 artists selected from the first Eurochallenge show competed and the judging panel selected six to progress to the final. The two guest international judges were once again Björkman and Kontopoulos.[34]

Final (1 February 2015)[]

The final was broadcast live on 1 February 2015. The six entries selected from the second Eurochallenge show competed including the winner, "One Thing I Should Have Done" performed by Giannis Karagiannis, was selected by a 50/50 combination of votes from the judging panel and public televoting.[35] The two guest international judges were Bruno Berberes (television director and former Head of Delegation for France at Eurovision) and Nicola Caligiore (Head of Delegation for Italy at Eurovision).[36]

At Eurovision[]

The Eurovision Song Contest 2015 took place at Wiener Stadthalle in Vienna, Austria. It consisted of two semi-finals held on 19 and 21 May, respectively, and the grand final on 23 May 2015.[37] According to Eurovision rules, all nations with the exceptions of the host country and the "Big Five", consisting of France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, were required to qualify from one of two semi-finals in order to compete for the final; the top 10 countries from each semi-final progress to the final.[38] In the 2015 contest, Australia also competed directly in the final as an invited guest nation.[39] The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) split up the competing countries into five different pots based on voting patterns from previous 10 years.[40] On 26 January 2015, an allocation draw was held which placed each country into one of the two semi-finals, as well as which half of the show they would perform in. Cyprus was placed into the second semi-final, to be held on 21 May 2015, and was scheduled to perform in the second half of the show.[41]

Once all the competing songs for the 2015 contest had been released, the running order for the semi-finals was decided by the shows' producers rather than through another draw, so that similar songs were not placed next to each other.[42] Cyprus was set to perform in position 15, following the entry from Switzerland and before the entry from Slovenia.[42] All three shows were broadcast in Cyprus on RIK 1, RIK SAT, RIK HD and Trito Programma with commentary by Melina Karageorgiou.[43] Loukas Hamatsos was the Cypriot spokesperson who announched the nation's votes during the grand final.[44]

Semi-final[]

John Karayiannis took part in technical rehearsals on 14 and 16 May, followed by dress rehearsals on 20 and 21 May 2015.[45] This included the jury final where professional juries of each country, responsible for 50 percent of each country's vote, watched and voted on the competing entries.[46]

At the start of the song, the arena was plunged into darkness and Karayiannis had a single spotlight shining down from above on him. The initial shots were all in black and white. Karayiannis was dressed very smartly in a black suit and black tie, with him wearing his trademark glasses. Gradually the light increased and the LED screens showed a star-like background, with the lighting having various hues of blue, purple and orange. Around two minutes into the song, the background exploded into flame-like bursts of light on key moments in the lyrics, especially on the 'I should' line.[47]

At the end of the show, Cyprus was announced as having finished in the top 10 and subsequently qualifying for the grand final.[48] It was later revealed that Cyprus placed sixth in the semi-final, receiving a total of 87 points.[49]

Shortly after the second semi-final, a winner's press conference was held for the 10 qualifying countries. As part of this press conference, the qualifying artists took part in a draw to determine which half of the grand final they would subsequently participate in. This draw was done in the order the countries were announced during the semi-final; Cyprus was drawn to compete in the first half.[50] Following this draw, the shows' producers decided upon the running order of the final, as they had done for the semi-finals. Cyprus was subsequently placed to perform in position 11, following the entry from Sweden and before the entry from Australia.[51]

Karayiannis once again took part in dress rehearsals on 22 and 23 May 2015 before the final, including the jury final where the professional juries cast their final votes before the live show.[52] Karayiannis performed a repeat of his semi-final performance during the final on 23 May. At the conclusion of the voting, Cyprus placed 22nd with 11 points.[53]

Voting[]

Voting during the three shows consisted of 50 percent public televoting and 50 percent from a jury deliberation. The jury consisted of five music industry professionals who were citizens of the country they represent, with their names published before the contest to ensure transparency. This jury was asked to judge each contestant based on: vocal capacity; the stage performance; the song's composition and originality; and the overall impression by the act. In addition, no member of a national jury could be related in any way to any of the competing acts in such a way that they cannot vote impartially and independently. The individual rankings of each jury member were released shortly after the grand final.[54]

Following the release of the full split voting by the EBU after the conclusion of the competition, it was revealed that Cyprus had placed twenty-third with the public televote and ninth with the jury vote in the final. In the public vote, the country scored 8 points, finishing in 23rd place, while in the jury vote, Cyprus placed ninth with 63 points. In the second semi-final, Cyprus placed eighth with the public televote, receiving 80 points and eighth with the jury vote with 76 points.[55]
