Evdokia Kadi was chosen as the Cyprus participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 and selected their entry through a national final, organised by Cypriot broadcaster Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC). Evdokia Kadi was chosen as the Cypriot representative with the song "Femme Fatale", which is a traditional Greek Laïkó song with a French title.

Before Eurovision[]

National final[]

The Cypriot national final in order to select Cyprus' entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 took place on 12 January 2008 (20:15 CET) at the CyBC Studio 3 in Nicosia, hosted by Andreas Ektoras. The show was broadcast on RIK 1, RIK Sat, on radio via Cyprus Radio 3 and London Greek Radio as well as online via the broadcaster's website cybc.cy and the official Eurovision Song Contest website eurovision.tv.[1]

Competing entries[]

Artists and composers were able to submit their entries to the broadcaster between 28 September 2007 and 15 November 2007.[2][3] At the conclusion of the deadline, 67 entries were received by CyBC.[4] Ten entries were selected by a seven-member selection committee and announced on 8 December 2007.[5] The running order for the ten entries was announced on 20 December 2007.[6]

Among the competing artists was former Cypriot Eurovision representative Marlain Angelidou (1999). Among the songwriters, Mike Connaris composed the Cypriot Eurovision entry in 2004.

Final[]

The final took place on 12 January 2008. Ten entries competed and the winner, "Femme Fatale" performed by Evdokia Kadi, was selected by a combination of votes from public televoting (60%) and a nine-member jury panel consisting of the seven-member selection committee as well as two guest jurors (40%).[7]

In addition to the performances of the competing entries, the show featured a guest performance by Evridiki and Dimitris Korgialas, performing the song "I zoi ehei hroma".[8]

At Eurovision[]

Cyprus took part in the second semi-final on 22 May 2008 and scored 36 points, of which the maximum 12 points were awarded by the United Kingdom, 8 by Bulgaria, 5 by Hungary, 4 by Turkey, 2 by each of Georgia, Albania and Switzerland, and 1 by Serbia, with the other fourteen voting countries all failing to award the song any points at all. This tally placed the Cypriot entry only 15th out of the 19 competitors in the semi-final, so it comfortably failed to qualify for the final.[9] It did not have the regular European promotional tour as in previous years.[2] Evdokia Kadi was invited as a guest to the Greek national selection where she promoted her entry.[10]
