Disability Pride Month
Disability Pride Month occurs in July "to listen to what the voices of disabled people have to say about their rights and what they need".[1] The month was chosen to recognize that the then President of the United States George H.W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law on July 26, 1990.[1][2] It has since been celebrated in other countries, such as the United Kingdom[3][4][5] and received media attention in South Africa.[6]
It is not a federal holiday in the U.S. and is mostly celebrated unofficially; however, some local governments recognize the month.[7] Parades are held in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, San Antonio and more.[2] As of 2015, it has been recognized by New York City under its mayor Bill de Blasio to honor the 25 years since the passing of the ADA.[2][8][9][10]
