Discovery+ (pronounced "Discovery plus"; stylized as discovery+) is a streaming service owned by Discovery, Inc. The service focuses on factual programming drawn from the libraries of Discovery's main channel brands, as well as original series (often involving spin-offs of existing programs from Discovery's networks), and other acquired content.

It was first launched in India on March 23, 2020. It expanded into the UK and Europe via a rebranding of the existing Dplay platforms,[1] and launched in the United States on January 4, 2021.

History[]

Discovery first launched Discovery+ in India on March 23, 2020, and included content from Discovery's various brands.[2] In September 2020, Discovery announced plans to launch an international version of Discovery+ in early 2021.[3]

In October 2020, it was announced that Dplay would be renamed Discovery+ in Denmark, the United Kingdom, and Ireland in the following month.[4][5]

On January 4, 2021, Discovery+ launched in the U.S. with both a paid ad-supported plan and an ad-free plan.[6][7]

On January 5, 2021, Discovery+ replaced Dplay in Europe.[8][9][10][11]

Discovery Inc. announced in August 2021 that it had 18 million total paying subscribers across all of its direct-to-consumer streaming services – including Discovery+, Food Network Kitchen, MotorTrend On Demand, and GolfTV. It did not provide a breakdown of how many subscribers each of these services has, but said most are Discovery+ subscribers.[12]

Programming[]

Original programming[]

Original programming carried by Discovery+ includes spin-offs of programs from Discovery's networks.[13] It also includes a preview of Magnolia Network — an upcoming relaunch of DIY Network headed by Chip and Joanna Gaines of the HGTV series Fixer Upper — including preview specials and the premiere episodes of ten of its original series.[13]

Content library[]

Discovery+ allows streaming of programs operated by the Discovery company such as HGTV, Food Network, TLC, Investigation Discovery, Asian Food Network, Animal Planet, Travel Channel, and Discovery Channel. They also have content from Discovery's other assets and exclusives varying by country.

In the U.S., Discovery+ also carries a selection of programming from A&E Networks' A&E, Lifetime, and History, as part of a licensing agreement.[14]

Sports[]

Discovery+ offers Eurosport events in select countries, including the 2020 Summer Olympics.[15]

Device support and service features[]

Discovery+ is available through traditional Windows/macOS web browsers, the major digital media player platforms (such as Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Apple TV and Chromecast), Android TV, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S gaming consoles, and through Android and iOS apps.[16]

Launch[]

Discovery+ planned to roll out 2021 and 2022 in Germany, Romania, Portugal, Greece, Czech Republic, Hungary, and Iceland.[17]

In August, Brazilian website vcfaz.tv has said that Discovery+ will launch in Brazil in 1 September, but Discovery has denied this.[18]

Criticism[]

Discovery+'s promotion, marketing, and advertising has drawn negative reactions from viewers.[25] The service has also been accused of paywalling traditional television subscribers by moving several shows seen on Discovery's linear networks to Discovery+.[26]
