Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero (ドラゴンボール (スーパー) スーパーヒーロー, Doragon Bōru Sūpā Sūpā Hīrō) is an upcoming Japanese computer-animated martial arts fantasy/adventure film produced by Toei Animation and written by Dragon Ball series creator Akira Toriyama. It is the twenty first Dragon Ball feature film overall, the fourth produced with Toriyama's direct involvement, the second to carry the Dragon Ball Super branding and the first to be produced mainly using 3D animation.[1][2] It was originally set for release in Japan on April 22, 2022 but postponed due to an unauthorized network intrusion at Toei Animation.[3][4][5]

Development[]

The original series author Akira Toriyama once again provides the original concept, writing the script (including every detail of the dialogue), and drawing character designs for the film (changing pre-existing characters to their manga designs rather than those used in the anime). It has been said that he is even more invested in this film than the prior three he wrote.[8][9][10]

Animation[]

Production began before the release of Dragon Ball Super: Broly.[8] It is the first film in the franchise to be produced mainly in 3D animation.[1][11]

Marketing[]

A sequel to Dragon Ball Super: Broly was officially announced on May 9, 2021.[9] At Comic-Con 2021, more details were announced as well as the film's title. Character designs for Piccolo, Pan, Krillin and a new character(s) were shown, as well as the design for Piccolo's home.[12][13] The 3D animation of character Goku was also shown in a brief preview.[8] The first trailer was released on October 7, 2021. The Japanese Release Date and a new trailer was showcased at Jump Festa 2022. [14][15]

Release[]

The film was originally scheduled to be released on April 22, 2022 in Japan 3D, IMAX 3D and 4DX but postponed due to hacking at Toei Animation .[16][6] In North America, it is currently scheduled for Summer 2022.[17]
