One Piece Film: Red (ワンピース フィルム レッド) is an upcoming Japanese anime fantasy action-adventure film directed by Gorō Taniguchi and produced by Toei Animation.[1][2] It is the fifteenth feature film of the One Piece film series, based on the manga of the same name written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. It was first announced on November 21, 2021 in commemoration of the One Piece anime episode 1000's release and following the broadcast of the episode, a teaser trailer and poster was released on November 21, 2021. It is scheduled for release on August 6, 2022.[3][4][5] The film is touted to be revolving around a new female character and "Red-Haired" Shanks.[6][7]

Gorō Taniguchi has previously directed the 1998 OVA, One Piece: Defeat The Pirate Ganzak!, which was produced by Production I.G. It was the first animated adaptation of One Piece manga, released before the anime series broadcast and had limited screenings in Japanese theaters. Oda stated that Taniguchi was “the first person to ever animate Luffy”.[8][9] After the first announcement of the film in November 2021, Taniguchi said that he wanted to express a One Piece that has never been seen before and that he will show it in One Piece Film: Red.[10]

According to Shinji Shimizu, a staff of Toei Animation and producer of One Piece anime, One Piece Film: Red is the only One Piece film that Eiichiro Oda has actively participated the most. Oda is the executive producer, character designer, and also the script reviewer of the film. He also said that the film will be different from the previous One Piece films. He added that the film will be a combination of 2D and 3D CGI though the main animation will be in 2D but in some scenes will be in 3D CGI to make it more impactful.[11]

The script for the film had discussed by Oda, Taniguchi and Tsutomu Kuroiwa for over two years. After it finished, Oda praised the final script saying "It’s fantastic!”. Tsutomu Kuroiwa, the screenwriter, assured that One Piece Film: Red will be a great movie that will touch many people’s hearts. [12]
