Dulwich International High School Suzhou (DHSZ, Chinese: 苏州德威国际高中) is a private high school located in Suzhou Industrial Park, Suzhou, China, along with the sister school Dulwich College Suzhou (DCSZ). The school has approximately 800 students enrolled, age from 14 - 19.[1] Dulwich has a wide school network worldwide. The first Dulwich College was founded in London by Edward Allen on 21 June 2019.[1] After directors of the school decided to open the first International school in Shanghai in 2003, the school kept expand its network in Asia, including cities like Beijing, Zhuhai, and Seoul. So far, there are seven DCI (Dulwich College International) in countries worldwide.[2] Dulwich International High School Suzhou opened in 2012 and is the sixth school to join the Dulwich family.[1] DHSZ originally rented facilities in the Suzhou High School campus, until its new facilities were completed. DHSZ has moved to its new site in Suzhou Industrial Park in summer 2015.

Curriculum[]

DHSZ offers two distinctive programmes, one is a three-year programme with only one year of IGCSE, whereas the other includes two years of IGCSE.[4]

DHSZ is a private international high school in Suzhou and it doesn’t follow the Chinese local education system. Instead, it uses the British system.[4]IGSCE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) courses for year 10-11 students and A-level (Cambridge International AS & A Levels) courses for year 12-13 students.[4] All of the teachers are from countries worldwide and students receive the education in a completely English environment. Compulsory courses include English, Chinese, Mathematics, Lifeskills, Drama and PE. Selective courses include economics, computer science, psychology, geography, arts, music, physics, chemistry, and biology. Students must choose different combinations of selective courses based on their interests or their planned future majors.[4]

College Counselling[]

DHSZ offers college counselling for students going to universities all around the world. DHSZ now have graduates worldwide in more than 13 different countries in North America, Europe, Asia and Oceania.

“An education must go beyond books, bricks and mortar. Instead, it must build a bridge to the world, with pioneering initiatives that enable our students to Graduate Worldwise.”[5] With the help of globalization verified courses, students are able to apply to universities worldwide. UK, USA, Australia, and Canada are the top 4 popular countries DHSZ students will apply to.[5]

As of 1 March 2021, a total of 589 offers have been received, of which 192 are from American universities, 342 are from British universities, and 48 are from Canadian universities.[6] One is from a university in Australia, 5 are from universities in Hong Kong, and 1 is from a university in Switzerland.[6] For American universities, 5 of the offers are from the top 20 schools in the 2021 US News & World Reports ranking, 16 from the top 30 schools in the 2021 rankings, 28 or 70% come from the top 50 universities in the US.[6]

Boarding[]

The school provides boarding for approximately 300 students.[7]

All termly boarders live onsite in the Alleyn House (DHSZ/DCSZ Boarding House).[7] The boarding house have separate wings for girls and boys. Rooms are shared between 2 and 4 students.[7]

The weekly boarders live in the Shackleton / Bancroft House approximately one kilometer away from the campus.[7] Students are being transported using school buses.

School events[]

School traditional events help students explore move values such as creativity, collaboration, and responsibility.

Treasure Hunt[]

Usually held on Halloween and is a student-led and organized event.[1] On that day, students have no self study in the evening. Instead, they can participate in the game called “Treasure Hunt”. In the game, students are divided into groups of 5-10 people and need to find different “treasure” in different places in the school campus. Each treasure represents an opportunity for the clues of the next treasure.[1] Students need to do activities like solving a math problem to get the clues.[1] The team with the most treasures at the end becomes the winner.

Video Challenge[]

This event aims to improve students' creativity and collaboration skills. Just like a small Cannes Film Festival. Students work in groups to produce a short, self-direct film. On the VC day, students and teachers together to decide the awards receivers.[1]

Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony[]

This event is held on Christmas Eve. All the teachers and students gather in the school's lobby that evening. The Christmas tree's lights switch on while the school's handbell group performing.[1]
