"Ecuador" is a song produced by German DJ and record production team Sash! featuring fellow German DJ Rodriguez. It was released in April 1997 as the third single from their debut album, It's My Life – The Album. The song became an international hit, peaking at number one in Flanders, Romania, Bulgaria and Scotland, as well as on the American and Canadian dance charts. It reached the top 20 in more than ten other countries worldwide.

A reviewer from Daily Record called it a "intelligent dance hit"[1] and a "catchy number".[2]

Chart performance[]

In the United Kingdom, "Ecuador" was almost as successful as "Encore une fois", reaching number 2 on the UK Singles Chart and earning Sash! a platinum certification for sales and streams in excess of 600,000 units.[3][4] "Ecuador" reached number one in the Flanders region of Belgium, Romania and Scotland and the top 10 in Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland.[5][6][7][8] It also reached the top 20 in Austria, France and Iceland.[5][9] On the Eurochart Hot 100, "Ecuador" peaked at number 3.[10] In the United States, the song was the second number-one on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart for Sash!.[11] It was a more successful dance hit in Canada, becoming Sash!'s first number one on the RPM Dance Chart, staying at the top position for four weeks and ending the year as Canada's second-most successful dance single, behind Stars on 54's version of "If You Could Read My Mind".[12][13]

Music video[]

The music video for "Ecuador" was directed by Oliver Sommer,[14] who also directed the music videos for "Encore une fois" and "Stay", and was shot in Lanzarote and Tenerife.[citation needed] "Ecuador" was uploaded to YouTube in October 2016. By November 2020, it has more than 60 million views.[15]

  • In 2010, the song was reworked by Fonzerelli on his label Mena Music.
  • In 2012, the song was remixed by S3RL in the song "9 Bars of Ecuador".
  • In 2011, the song was remixed with vocals by Jean Pearl in the song "Mirror Mirror".
  • In 2013, the music from the song was used for the dance hit "This Is Nightlife" by the German dance project ItaloBrothers.
  • In 2016, the song was reworked by DJ Olly James and released on Spinnin' Records.
  • In 2017, it was rumored that DJ Samuel Agius was working on a remix version for this hit song.
  • In 2018, it was sampled by the French singer Tal for her song "Mondial".
  • In 2018, it was also sampled by Faulhaber for the song "Savannah".
  • In 2020, Brazilian artist Karol Conká and Mc Rebecca appear to sample the melody of the song on A Preta é Braba.

In popular culture[]

"Ecuador" (Bruce Wayne Mix) is played repeatedly on the loading platform of The Riddler's Revenge ride at Six Flags Magic Mountain in an instrumental, seamlessly-looping version.
