Synopsis[]

In Avalor, Elena and Naomi talk on a mountain about how the former was trapped in the Amulet of Avalor for 41 years. She presents Shuriki's broken wand to Naomi and recounts how Princess Sofia saved her and Avalor.

In the past, Sofia has a vision in school of Shuriki killing Elena's parents before striking Elena with a spell but wakes to the fairy Flora dismissing the students for summer vacation before she could see what happened. As King Roland and Queen Miranda try to decide where to go for their summer vacation, Sofia's amulet summons her to the castle's secret library. The library turns one of its books into the wizard Alacazar, who explains how Elena originally possessed Sofia's amulet, which saved her life by pulling her inside when Shuriki attacked her. Alacazar searched for years for someone who could help him free Elena. When he grew old, he turned himself into a book in this library and placed the amulet in the castle to wait for someone. With her new quest, Sofia convinces her family to spend their vacation in Avalor.

Upon arrival, Sofia is horrified to learn that they would meet Shuriki as a formality and notices that the cheering crowds are not happy, spotting several signs of suppression. At the palace, Shuriki is eating with them when winged jaguars, known as jaquins, snatch some food. Sofia asks for their help to bring Elena back, which the jaquins agree to and take her to Alacazar's old house.

At the house, Alacazar's daughter greets Sofia, and his grandson Mateo takes her to his workshop. He secretly trains to be a wizard, as Shuriki outlawed all magic other than her own when she took over. Mateo summons Alacazar's spirit guide Zuzo, who tells Sofia to get Shuriki's wand. At the palace, Shuriki's contemplates invading Enchancia when Sofia invites her to dance the sambarossa. During the dance, Sofia manages to swipe Shuriki's wand and then pretends to play hide and seek with Amber and James to hide them while she finishes the ritual. Sofia meets Mateo and the jaquins at the Maruvian temple holding the Crown of Aziluna underneath a magical lake. She turns into a mermaid and places her amulet and Shuriki's wand on a statue, which rises from the water and releases Elena from Sofia's amulet. Against the group's objections, Elena takes Shuriki's wand, insisting on confronting the witch alone.

At the palace, Elena confronts Shuriki in the throne room and reveals to Sofia's family how Shuriki usurped her place. After a short fight, Shuriki overpowers Elena, retrieves her wand, and reveals that Esteban is Elena's cousin and that Alacazar sealed Elena's sister and grandparents in a painting in the palace. Skylar flies in and helps Elena escape while Shuriki throws Sofia's family into the dungeon. After regrouping at Alacazar's house, Sofia, Elena, and Mateo sneak back to the castle and meet Armando, who agrees to help. Together, Sofia and Armando manage to free her family and get them to agree to help with their plan to overthrow Shuriki. Luna attacks Shuriki, distracting her for long enough for Mateo to sneak in and free Elena's family from the painting with magic. The entire group flies off and rallies the citizens of Avalor against Shuriki, getting them to march on the palace and making the guards flee. Once the mob forced their way inside the gates, Esteban steals Shuriki's wand and gives it to Elena, who snaps it. With her magic lost, Shuriki ages rapidly and falls from the palace bridge to an uncertain fate.

Elena assumes her place as Crown Princess of Avalor and decides to gift her amulet to Sofia. Sofia reports her success to Alacazar in Enchantia, who gives her a new dress. Back in the present, Elena and Naomi decide to lock Shuriki's wand away in the treasury.
