Elijah Horowitz-Winograd

Rabbi Elijah Solomon Ha-Levy Horowitz-Winograd(ow) (c. 1842 – May 27, 1878) was a 19th-century Polish-Belarusian rabbi who held rabbinic post in Lida.

R. Elijah was born in Lida, Belarus around 1842. His father R. Moses Isaac was the grandson of R. Zevi Joshua Horowitz, son of R. Schmelke Horowitz of Nikolsburg and son-in-law of R. Pinchas Horowitz. R. Elijah married the daughter of (1806-1853), author of the work "Darkhei Teshuva v'Shevilei Ha-Leket " (1904, New York).[1][2] After his studies, he and his wife returned to Lida, where R. Elijah became a leading rabbinic figure and headed several local institutions. R. Elijah died in Warsaw in 1878 and is buried in the Warsaw Jewish Cemetery. His eldest son, R. Abraham was a prominent Polish industrialist and his daughter Leonie was the mother of the Polish artist Aleksander Żyw (1905-1995).[3][4]
