Elon Musk in popular culture

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Elon Musk has influenced or been referenced in many works of popular culture. His biography, Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future, was authored by Ashlee Vance and released in 2015. He has also had multiple film and television cameos.

Influence and cameos[]

Musk influenced Robert Downey Jr.'s film portrayal of Tony Stark.

Musk had a cameo in the 2010 film Iron Man 2, in which he gives a brief line to Tony Stark — portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. — regarding an "electric jet."[1] Musk's persona reportedly helped Downey Jr. get into character for his role as Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).[2] Since actor Mickey Rourke played a role in both Iron Man 2 and in Diner where Kevin Bacon also plays a role, Musk has a Bacon number of 2.[3]

For the 2011 documentary Revenge of the Electric Car, filmmakers followed Musk from 2007 through the end of 2010. The film depicts the early years of Tesla Motors and the setbacks it endured as it built the first Tesla Roadster vehicles.[4]

Musk had a minor role in the 2013 film Machete Kills.[5]

In January 2015, Musk made a guest appearance playing himself on The Simpsons in an episode titled "The Musk Who Fell to Earth"; the episode poked fun at many of Musk's ideas.[6] In November 2015, Musk appeared in the ninth episode of the ninth season of The Big Bang Theory entitled "The Platonic Permutation", as himself volunteering at a soup kitchen with Howard Wolowitz.[7][8] Musk also appeared as himself in a November 2017 of The Big Bang Theory spin-off prequel series Young Sheldon.[9]

Musk was featured in the 2015 environmental documentary Racing Extinction, in which a custom Tesla Model S was designed to help project images of critically endangered species onto public buildings, including the Empire State Building and the Vatican.[10] The same year Musk appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where the host concluded that Musk is a supervillain and likened him to Lex Luthor.[11] Musk also appeared in the Werner Herzog-directed documentary Lo and Behold (2016).[12]

In 2016, Musk voiced himself in several episodes of South Park including the episode "Members Only".[13][14] Later that year, Musk appeared as himself in the romantic comedy film Why Him? where he was briefly met by one of the main characters, Ned Flemming played by Bryan Cranston, in a bar at a party.[15] In December 2016, Robby in New Girl refers to saving a life, and when asked who, responds "Do you know who Elon Musk is?"[16] Also in 2016, Musk was referenced by Dr. Martin Stein on The CW time-travel TV show DC's Legends of Tomorrow.[17]

In October 2017, Musk was mentioned as being part of the shared Star Trek universe on the CBS All Access series Star Trek: Discovery.[18] In February 2019, Musk co-hosted YouTuber PewDiePie's show "Meme Review" with Justin Roiland at the request of PewDiePie's fans.[19][20] In October of the same year, Musk voiced an alternate reality version of himself with tusks, known as "Elon Tusk", in the season four Rick and Morty episode "One Crew over the Crewcoo's Morty".[21][22] Musk had a cameo appearance as an alien in Men in Black: International (2019).[23] In the 2019 science fiction book , one of the main characters is based on Musk. [24]

In 2021 Musk coauthored a peer-reviewed scientific paper on COVID-19 together with, among others, Pardis Sabeti.[25] Since Sabeti has an Erdős number of 3,[26] Musk has an Erdős number of 4.[27] Given his Bacon number of 2, Musk consequently has an Erdős–Bacon number of 6.

On May 8, 2021, Musk hosted the 907th episode of Saturday Night Live, with musical guest Miley Cyrus.[28] The episode was live-streamed on YouTube to more than 100 countries.[29]
