Eric Chou (Chinese: 周興哲; pinyin: Zhōu Xīngzhé, born 22 June 1995) is a Taiwanese singer-songwriter. Chou has been dubbed by the Taiwanese media as "king of the lovelorn people" for his ballads such as "How Have You Been" and "Let's Not Be Friends Anymore".[1][2]

Early life[]

Born and raised in Taiwan, Eric Chou moved to Boston, USA, when he was 12 years old, and returned to Taiwan when he was 18. In the United States, Chou attended Fay School and Northfield Mount Hermon School.[3] He has a younger brother named Jimmy/James and an older brother named Alex (周予天) who is also a singer-songwriter.[4]

He has been playing classical piano since he was young. Due to his passion for music, Chou loves composing. His inspiration for songwriting comes mainly from movies and the experiences of him and his friends.[5][6]

Career[]

Chou was scouted by his entertainment company when he performed onstage and sang at his uncle's wedding.[4][7]

At age 19, Chou debuted with Learn to Love (學著愛), a self-composed album featuring eleven tracks, in December 2014. The album includes the song, The Distance of Love (以後別做朋友), which has been viewed over 180 million times on YouTube and is his most viewed music video to date.[8]

Chou released his second studio album, What Love Has Taught Us (愛,教會我們的事), in August 2016. The album consists of ten tracks, including the song How Have You Been? (你,好不好?), which has over 165 million views on YouTube.[9]

Chou performed for Rock On! 2017, the largest countdown party in Singapore, on 31 December 2016.[5]

Chou released his third studio album, The Chaos After You (如果雨之後), in December 2017. The album contains ten songs, including the title track of the same name, which has over 100 million views on YouTube.[10]

Chou released his first EP, Freedom (終於了解自由), in January 2019, which consists of five tracks. He held his first concert tour for the year, which kicked off in Taipei. In December 2019, Chou released his fourth studio album of the same name, which includes the five tracks from the EP plus four new songs. The song What's Wrong (怎麼了) from the EP/album has over 105 million views on YouTube.[11]

Chou released his fifth studio album, When We Were Young (小時候的我們), in January 2020. The album consists of eleven tracks, including I'm Happy (我很快樂), which has over 20 million views on YouTube.[12]

To raise funds for the COVID-19 pandemic, Eric Chou will donate all proceeds from a new remake of "Forever Beautiful", sung together with other Asian Sony artists.[13]
