Esther de Lange (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɛstər də ˈlɑŋə]; born 19 February 1975) is a Dutch politician serving as a Member of the European Parliament since 2007. A member of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA), part of the European People's Party, she was elected as CDA Leader in the European Parliament during a party conference on 2 November 2013 in Leeuwarden. Since 2014 Esther de Lange was elected as Vice President of both the EPP Group in the European Parliament and the EPP Party.

Political career[]

After having been voted Member of the European Parliament in the 2014 European elections, De Lange was elected one of the vice presidents of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, responsible for the relations with national legislatures.

During the 8th parliamentary term De Lange was a member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON), and of the Committee on Industry, Research, and Energy (ITRE).[1] In the current parliamentary term, De Lange is a member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health, and Food Safety (ENVI) and of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON).[2] Since 2021, she has been part of the Parliament's delegation to the Conference on the Future of Europe.[3]

Previously, she was a member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health, and Food Safety (ENVI); the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRI); and the Committee on Budgetary Control (BUDG). Besides that, De Lange was a member of the delegation for relations with India, and was Vice-Chair of the Delegation for the relations with Iraq.

In addition to her committee assignments, De Lange is also member of the delegations for the EU relations with the United States and Russia. She chairs the MEP Water Group.[4] and is also a member of the European Parliament Intergroup on the Welfare and Conservation of Animals,[5] the European Parliament Intergroup on LGBT Rights[6] and the MEPs Against Cancer group.[7]

In her parliamentary work, De Lange mostly focused on agriculture, food safety, and sustainability. Under the 2009-2014 mandate, she has been actively involved in the revision of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). De Lange has been acting as rapporteur on the dossier of food labeling and nutrition for special (medical) use in the European Parliament. In 2013, De Lange acted as the European Parliament's rapporteur on the issue of food fraud in the EU.

Following the 2019 elections, De Lange was part of a cross-party working group in charge of drafting the European Parliament's five-year work program on economic and fiscal policies as well as trade.[8]

Within the centre-right European People's Party Group (EPP) group, De Lange is one of the deputies of chairman Manfred Weber.[9] In her capacity as vice-chair of the EPP Group she heads the working group on Economy and Environment.[10] In 2021, she was appointed to the group's task force for proposing changes to its rules of procedure to allow for “the possibility of the collective termination of membership of a group of Members rather than just individual membership”, alongside Esteban González Pons, Othmar Karas, Jan Olbrycht and Paulo Rangel.[11]

Political positions[]

De Lange has been outspoken critic of right-wing populist movements in the EU.[12] For example, she has repeatedly and publicly indicated frustration at Hungary's Fidesz party, which is part of the EPP.[13]

Personal[]

De Lange has a son and commutes between the village of Driebruggen and Brussels.[14]
