Eternal Love of Dream (Chinese: 三生三世枕上书; pinyin: Sān Shēng Sānshì Zhěn Shàngshū), also known as Three Lives Three Worlds, The Pillow Book, is a 2020 Chinese web series starring Dilraba Dilmurat and Vengo Gao.^[1][2] It is based on the novel Three Lives Three Worlds, The Pillow Book by Tangqi Gongzi, and is the sequel to the 2017 drama Eternal Love. The series started airing on Tencent Video on January 22, 2020, and concluded its run of 56 episodes on March 5, 2020.^[3]

Synopsis[]

Queen of Qing Qiu, Bai Feng Jiu (Dilraba Dilmurat), is the only red nine-tailed fox in the world. One day, while returning to Qing Qiu, Feng Jiu accidentally falls into the Western barren lands of the Demon Realm where she is attacked by a savage beast and is saved by the first Emperor of Heaven, Dong Hua Dijun (Vengo Gao). Feeling grateful and indebted, Feng Jiu proceeds to seeks guidance from the high God Zhe Yan for the repayment of her life debt.

With the help of Si Ming, Feng Jiu enters Tai Chen Palace as a fairy maid; but, due to Dong Hua's jealous foster-sister Zhihe's interference, Feng Jiu never gets a chance to meet him. To save Dong Hua from the Ten-Lotus ward, she exchanges her nine-tailed fox fur for some of the demon lord Nie Chuyin's magic, thus turning into an ordinary red spiritual fox. Upon exiting the ward, Dong Hua takes the fox back with him to Tai Chen Palace. Eventually, her gratitude towards him changes to love, but Dong Hua does not understand "love" anymore due to his fight in the struggle against evil for thousands of years.

The arrival of the Demon Princess, Ji Heng, changes circumstances as Dong Hua locks up Feng Jiu for hurting Ji Heng. For a long period of time, Dong Hua forgets about Feng Jiu. She is then attacked by Ji Heng's spiritual pet, Snow Lion, and almost gets killed but is saved instead by Si Ming. Si Ming then tells Feng Jiu about Dong Hua and Ji Heng's marriage. These circumstances leads to her emotional breakdown due to which she assumes that Dong Hua merely sees her as a pet and nothing more. She leaves Tai Chen Palace and returns to Qing Qiu without telling Dong Hua of her real identity. On being told by his Stewart, Chong Lin, that his fox is missing, Dong Hua searches for her but fails to find her.

Later, Feng Jiu repays her life debt to Dong Hua by helping him in his mortal trial. She is quickly indebted again, this time to the mortal Qingti who died to save her from demonic sword. She returns from the mortal realm with a promise to revive him.

On returning to Qing Qiu, she meets her Aunt, high goddess, Crown Princess, Bai Qian who returned from traveling along with Crown Prince, Ye Hua. Preparations of their wedding were in progress. Donghua Dijun was sent to pick the bride as Mo Yuan was not available and no other high god can be worthy to bring the future heavenly queen to the 36 heavenly palace.

This is when Dong Hua meets Feng Jiu for the first time in her princess form. After that, the wedding banquet is held for the married couple in the heavens, where Feng Jiu accidentally kicks the flower pot towards Dong Hua's head which he is able to stop and after seeing Feng Jiu blame Mi Gu for the crime of kicking a flower pot toward his head, Dong Hua begins to take interest in her. Later, Bai Qian set Feng Jiu up on a blind date with a celestial fairy of Heaven. Not willing to remarry, Feng Jiu drove her date away, and mistook Dong Hua for Mi Gu. She then began reminiscing to him about Ye Qing Ti who died in saving her.

On the last day of Lian Song's Flower Festival, Feng Jiu took her cousin, Ah Li, to see a play. On the way, Ah Li became tired and the two took a rest. Soon after, Princess Zhi He, Dong Hua's adopted sister's, carriage ascended from the lower realm to attend festivities.

Arriving at Cheng Tian Terrace, Feng Jiu fought with a Chi Yan (Red Flame) Beast and Dong Hua ended up saving her. Rumors circulated throughout the Heavens about Dong Hua and a Beautiful fairy. Lian Song came to Dong Hua to confirm these rumors and said that if Dong Hua wanted to take a wife, Zhi He is not a bad choice.

Escaping from a party she was forced to attend, Feng Jiu decided to take a late-night bath. Not long after, Dong Hua appeared and draped his cloak over her just as Lian Song came. Another rumor started out, this time saying that Dong Hua kept a beauty in his palace. Realizing that she lost the bracelet Qing Ti had given her, Feng Jiu went to find Dong Hua to inquire about it. However, she went at the wrong time, causing Dong Hua to tease her in front of the newly ascended immortals. Thus, another rumor started about Dijun and Qing Qiu's youngest female monarch, Bai Fengjiu.

Tian Jun, the emperor of Heaven, decided to hold a party for the newly ascended fairies and, wanting to please Dong Hua, he announced that Zhi He will be returning to Heaven. Feng Jiu told the heavenly emperor that if someone wants to return to heavens after being demoted to lower realms one must help those in need and fight the evils. To which Dong Hua told that he will complete the requirements in place of Zhihe. She felt hurt that Dong Hua cares for Zhihe but not her. This surfaced her ill memories of the time spent in Tai Chen palace To forget her painful memories, Feng Jiu got drunk and told Dong Hua to take her along when he is going for battles. She also blamed him for calling her a pet and not caring about her feelings. Dong Hua was not able to remember any such incident brought her back to her room and left in the morning as Feng Jiu was not letting go of his cloak.

No longer able to face the crowd, Feng Jiu instructed Ah Li to be her eyes and ears. While waiting for Ah Li to report back, Feng Jiu turned into a handkerchief to avoid another scandal with Dong Hua. Knowing full well that it was her, Dong Hua took Feng Jiu to his battle with Green Demon Lord, Yan Chi Wu, a demon lord whom Dong Hua thought kidnapped his favorite pet fox long ago. During the battle, Chi Wu summoned a cyclone that swept both him and Feng Jiu away.

The two ended up at a valley and, thinking that Feng Jiu is Dong Hua's lover, Chi Wu started telling her about Dong Hua and Ji Heng that they love each other. When caught by the Inseparable King Birds guards, they don’t reveal their identities as their own Kingdoms aren’t on good terms with the Valley. The Prince of the Valley helps them out numerous times as he is kind-hearted and innocent. The two also attend classes at the Imperial College of the Valley with the Prince and Princess. When Feng Jiu comes to know that there is a competition held by the Valley to win the Pimpon fruit, she is hell-bent on getting nominated and winning the competition to get the fruit to revive Qing Ti. However, Dijun comes to the Valley (he visits as a guest lecturer for the tea-making class every decade) and finds Feng Jiu there. They share cute romantic moments in the Valley although Feng Jiu is still under the impression that he is in love with Ji Heng and has come to the Valley for her (Ji Heng lives as a musician secluded from the world in the Valley and only shows herself every ten years when Dijun visits to serve him as he is helping her get rid of the toxin in her body). Looking at Feng Jiu’s determination to get the fruit, Dijun decides to train her, his ulterior motive being close to her and keeping her distant from Chi Wu, who he thinks she is interested in. In order to get the fruit, she enters a magical world where she lives the painful life of Aranya,a princess. Again saved by Dong hua, they both realize their feelings for each other. After coming back Fengjiu treats the injured Ye Qing Ti with the fruit. They soon plan their wedding but Donghua does not show up, as the demon princess emotionally blackmailed him to bring her back to the demon kingdom. A heartbroken leaves and starts her new life in mortal realm with her child Bai Gungun. After some time she visits Tai Chen palace of insist of Si Ming, where she meets a sick Donghua as he detoxifyied the demon princess. Dong Hua gives her a ring which he made from his half heart. Fengjiu still in rage leaves for the mortal kingdom only to receive the news that Donghua is fighting to seal an evil spirit, which he had sealed a long time ago. Fengjiu goes to the place and helps Donghua seal the spirit, they succeed but Fengjiu needs up getting injured. When he was treating Fengjiu he meets his son Gungun and was left shocked. Fengjiu wakes up and they both apologize for their mistakes and Donghua announces Ye Qing Ti his successor.

On January 24, 2018, it was announced Vengo Gao and Dilraba Dilmurat would be reprising their roles as Dong Hua and Bai Fengjiu from Eternal Love, respectively.^[9] Eternal Love of Dream is Vengo Gao and Dilraba Dilmurat's seventh collaboration, after Swords of Legends, V Love, Legend of Ban Shu, The Ladder of Love, Eternal Love, and Mr. Pride vs Miss Prejudice.

The series began filming on June 10, 2018 at Hengdian World Studios, and wrapped 162 days later on November 19, 2018.^[10][11]

Reception[]

Eternal Love of Dream surpassed more than 190 million views on its first day of release, and over 1 billion views in just one week on Chinese Tencent Video platforms.^[12][13] As of April 2021, the series has exceeded 8 billion views on the online platform.^[14] The series also gained a firm footing internationally, scoring a first in the online view rankings for Thailand, and exceeding a million clicks for its first few episodes in Vietnam.^[15] The series has a 6.7 and 7.9 rating on Douban and China Tencent Video, respectively.^[16]

Eternal Love of Dream won "Best Web Series of the Year"^[17] at the 2020 Tencent Video All Star Awards, while Vengo Gao won "Quality Series Actor of the Year"^[18] and Dilraba Dilmurat won "Most Popular Series Actor of the Year".^[19] For his role as Dong Hua, Vengo Gao also won "Best Actor in a Period Drama" at the 29th Huading Awards.^[20]
