Federico Gatti (born 24 June 1998) is an Italian professional footballer who plays as a defender for Serie B club Frosinone, on loan from Serie A club Juventus.

Grown up with Chieri, Torino and Alessandria, Gatti started his senior career with Promozione — the sixth tier of the Italian football system — team Pavarolo in 2015, helping his team be promoted to the Eccellenza. The following year, Gatti joined Saluzzo but returned to Pavarolo six months later. Gatti stayed at Pavarolo until 2018, when he moved to Verbania, gaining the promotion to the Serie D. In 2020, Gatti made his professional debut with Serie C side Pro Patria. The following year, Gatti was bought by Serie B side Frosinone. In January 2022, Gatti joined Juventus who loaned him back to Frosinone until June 2022.

Personal life[]

Aged 17, Gatti left school and started working, following his father's unemployment. He worked as a bricklayer, window manufacturer, repaired roofs and worked at the general markets for 9 to 10 hours a day, until 2018.[1] Gatti only trained in the evening, had dinner at 23:00[2] and got up at 04:00.[3]

Gatti considers Juventus' defender Giorgio Chiellini as his idol.[4]

Gatti's father, Ludovico was a football coach[5] and sporting director during his experience at Pavarolo.[6]

Career[]

Youth career[]

In 2005, aged 7, he played a friendly game for Chieri against Torino; his talent as an attacking midfielder was noticed by Giorgio Boscarato, Torino's sporting observer, and reported him to Silvano Benedetti, the Torino Youth Sector sporting director who ultimately bought him.[2] Gatti was eventually promoted to the under-15s, before moving on to Alessandria's youth team.[7]

Pavarolo and Saluzzo[]

Gatti was then loaned to Promozione side Pavarolo in the 2014–15 season.[8] Gatti spent the biggest part of the season playing for the Juniores (under-19s) with whom he scored 13 goals in 18 appearances team in spite of his being 17 and instead of playing with the Allievi (under-17s) side.[8] On 25 February 2015, Gatti made his debut with the first team.[8] Gatti ended the 2014–15 season with four appearances for the first team.[8] The following season, Gatti was promoted to the first team, he scored three goals in 27 appearances and he won the award as the Best Youth Player of the season.[8][9] His side were also promoted to the Eccellenza as they won the Coppa Italia Promozione Piemonte–Valle d'Aosta — a regional competition for Promozione teams.[8][9][10] Gatti was loaned to Saluzzo in 2016,[10] but returned to Pavarolo six moths later,[11] helping his team avoid relegation to the Promozione.[10][12] During this season, Gatti scored eight goals in 31 appearances.[8] In the following season (2017–18), due to the economic problems, the side were behind with the payments, so the most experienced players decided neither to train nor to play the last ten league matches and the Juniores team were promoted to the first team.[3] As Gatti was the tallest player in the squad, he changed his position from midfielder to defender.[3][7] Gatti ended the 2017–18 season scoring seven goals in 27 league appearances,[13] but he did not manage to avoid his team be relegated to the Promozione.[12]

Verbania and Pro Patria[]

Gatti's performances as a defender impressed Verbania, who purchased him on a permanent deal in 2018;[9][12] he scored one goal in 34 appearances and helped his side win the Eccellenza.[14][15] Gatti's performances in his new position impressed Serie C side Cavese who tried to purchase him but he did not join them.[8] In the following season (2019–20), he scored three goals in 22 matches with his side in Serie D prior the interruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy.[16] In 2020, Gatti made his professional move to Serie C side Pro Patria, making 35 appearances and scoring one goal.[16]

Frosinone[]

Gatti moved to Serie B side Frosinone in 2021[14][15] singing a four-year contract,[17] making his debut on 15 August, in the Coppa Italia first round match against Venezia drawn 1–1 when he missed a crucial penalty in the penalty shoot-outs lost 8–7.[16] Gatti's first goal for the Frosinone came on 23 October, when he scored in a 2–1 win against Ascoli.[16] On 4 December, Gatti was booked twice in two minutes and therefore sent-off in a match eventually drawn 1–1 against Ternana.[18] On 18 December, Gatti scored a brace in a 4–0 win against SPAL.[19]

On 31 January 2022, Serie A club Juventus signed Gatti on a four-and-a-half-year deal for a fee of 7,5 million plus €2,5 million in performance-related bonuses, and promptly loaned him back to Frosinone for the rest of the season.[20]

Style of play[]

Gatti is a right-footed centre-back who is strong in the air at 1.90 m (6 ft 3 in) tall;[7][21] a good technique thanks to his previous experience as a midfielder,[12] and strong physicality.[12] Gatti stands out on the pitch for his determination and personality. Strong in tackles and in contrasts, he has a sense of position and timing in anticipation.[7] Frosinone sporting director Guido Angelozzi drew comparisons to Juventus' centre-back duo, defining Gatti as "a [Giorgio] Chiellini with [Leonardo] Bonucci's feet".[22]
