At Metacritic, which assigns a weighted average score out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, First of a Living Breed received an average score of 77% based on 8 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[1]

First of a Living Breed was listed by NPR Music as one of their "50 Favorite Albums of 2012".[10] It was ranked at number 5 on The Village Voice's "Ten Best New York City Rap Albums of 2012" list.[11]
