Floriade 2022

Floriade Expo 2022 is a Dutch horticultural exposition to be held in Almere, Netherlands. It will be the 23rd AIPH world horticultural exhibition and the seventh Floriade and will be held from 14 April to 9 October 2022.^[1] On 15 November 2017, Floriade Expo 2022 was officially recognized as a horticultural exhibition by the Bureau International des Expositions.

Around 2 million visitors are expected to the exposition.

The theme of the Expo is "Growing Green Cities" and will focus on the need to combine nature and cities.^[2]

Bhutan has announced its intention of participating and signed a letter of intent on 12 January 2020.^[3] The director is Pieter Cloo. Construction of the site in Weerwater, Almere started in February 2020 by Amvest and Dura Vermeer.

Nomination[]

Candidacy for Floriade Expo 2022 was opened in September 2011. By the closing date of 1 December 2011, seven candidates had applied: the Rivierengebied region, the Noord-Holland-Noord region, the municipality of Almere, the municipality of Amsterdam, the Boskoop region, the municipality of Groningen and the Coöperatie Flevoland 2022 from Lelystad.

After an initial selection round, the Dutch Horticultural Council (NTR) decided to ask four candidates to make a bid book in which the plans would be worked out in more detail. This bid book had to be submitted by 1 July 2012.

The four candidates for the Floriade 2022 were:

·       The municipality of Almere

·       the municipality of Amsterdam^{[citation needed]}

·       Boskoop region

·       the municipality of Groningen

During a meeting at Keukenhof Castle in Lisse on 24 September 2012, the NTR announced that the Floriade 2022 would be organised by the municipality of Almere.^{[citation needed]}

Construction[]

Work started on the Floriade site on 14 February 2020.The site will first be made ready for construction, after which the builders start to build roads, bridges, showcase houses, i-Streets and country pavilions. Design Erick van Egeraat, Paul de Ruiter Architects, René van Zuuk Architekten, SeARCH and Studio RAP will design the first phase of the pavilions. The master plan for the Floriade was made by MVRDV.

After the exhibition[]

After the Expo the area of the horticultural exhibition will be transformed in a residential area with 660 homes. Half of these houses will already be built before the opening of the event. These houses will then serve as exhibition spaces. The brand name of this new city district is 'Hortus'.^{[citation needed]} The literal meaning of which is garden in Latin.
