Birth and origins[]

Frederick was born before 1786 in Ireland.[a] He was the eldest son of Gustavus Hamilton and his wife Elizabeth Brooke. His father would later be ennobled as Baron Stackallan and Viscount Boyne. His father's family was a Protestant cadet branch of the Catholic Earls of Abercorns, who in turn descended from the Scottish Clan Hamilton.[1] His mother was the second daughter of of Brookeborough in Fermanagh.[2][3]

Marriage and children[]

On 1 September 1707, Mr Hamilton married Sophia Hamilton, daughter of James Hamilton of Tollymore, near Newcastle, County Down, and sister of James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Clanbrassil of the second creation.[8][9]

Frederick and Sophia had four children, two sons:

  1. Gustavus (1710–1746), succeeded his grandfather as Viscount Boyne
  2. James (died 1740), lieutenant in the navy

—and two daughters:

  1. Anne (born 1712), died young
  2. Elizabeth (born 1715), died young

Offices[]

Frederick Hamilton was a Member of Parliament from 1707 to 1715 for Donegal County, the same constituency his father had represented. He entered parliament in 1707 as a replacement for Henry Conyngham (soldier),[10] who had been killed in the Battle of St Estevan of the War of the Spanish Succession.[11]

Frederick was reelected for that same seat in the Irish general elections of 1713[12] and 1715.[13] The latter parliament lasted from 12 November 1715 to 11 June 1727, but Frederick died on 10 December 1715 and was after not even a month's service replaced by his brother Gustavus.[14]

In 1710 Frederick Hamilton was appointed Vice-Admiral of Ulster, a sine cure that he held until his death.[15]

Death, succession, and timeline[]

Frederick Hamilton died on 10 December 1715[16] predeceasing his father, who died in 1723,[17] and his mother, who died in 1721.[18] At the time of Frederick's death his father had just been ennobled as Baron Stackallan and was not yet Viscount Boyne. Frederick therefore died as an heir apparent without a courtesy title. His father was succeeded by Frederick's son Gustavus as the 2nd Viscount Boyne.[19]
